OT: Yellowstone tourists react as wolves gang up on grizzly bear

Post by IronNoggin »

A tour group in Yellowstone National Park on Friday experienced a “once-in-a-lifetime” sighting of a large grizzly bear being harassed by wolves.

Interesting footage

I love it!

My greatest regret is that I can't post that video on a site that is now closed. The host of that site (Jayco Creek) had a hate on for wolves. Every chance that he had of raging about how wolves were killing off huge numbers of elk, deer etc, he go on and on about it. He'd complain bitterly about how the wolves were imported from Canada, and were a stronger and tougher breed than the original variety, and why did the Federal Government do it?

I couldn't help but point out that we (Canada) had lots of wolves, deer, elk and moose. If his Government was to be blamed for anything, they simply failed to import a better Canadian genetics for ALL of the species, deer, moose, elk, etc. What was needed was a general upgrade. Or, since we had gone to a heck of a lot of bother to catch and ship the wolves to the USA, if they don't want/need them any more, catch them and send them back.

Besides, maybe there was another side to the wildlife planning. Maybe this was actually a bit of Urban Planning. Maybe this was intended to become an answer to the Homeless problem. If wolves moved into the cities, like coyotes have done, maybe this would motivate a homeless person to get and keep a home.

Poor old Jayco Creek. He never did appreciate the benefits of wolves being reintroduced.

(Sorry, Nog for wandering around this piece of good video you posted.)

After realizing how I had diverted your thread, Nog, I started thinking about your video.

Were the wolves merely asserting territorial dominance? Or, was there a kill nearby that they were protecting? Or, maybe a den?

My guess is that they had a kill nearby. Something seemed to be interesting that bear, like maybe the scent of a kill. In an accidental meeting, I would bet that they ( the first two wolves and the bear) would simply avoid each other. The rest of the pack would not get drawn into the situation, because there would be no "situation".

The video is reminiscent of lions surrounded by hyenas.

Thanks for posting.

If the bear backed up against some cover to protect his backside,my money would be on the bear kicking butt.

I agree. I was surprised that he did not kill a couple of the wolves at the very first before they all surrounded him.

That was a cool video.
I was waiting for one of those wolves to slip up and that bear to do some serious damage to one of them.
