Good luck Aj .
As said ,Dan knows how much time l spent ln that stand
Over 40 nights and a few mornings lm beginning to think he was on to me even though l was never seen in the stand.
I had to pass a big open area to get there im thinking he eyeballs me in the open . ...or simply bad timing maby he didn't do evenings
Either way lt took a push to get him out .
Just goes to show you the way you gotta push yourself even l was wearing down.
Even the way l got burned and went to my jersey spot the other day was me giving up on my target buck.
It was just luck that l got the first buck there ,l was just in the right spot at the right time l don't have a camera or anything there so l had no idea he was there... Probably better off without a camera or l would have had 2 bucks driving me crazy.
Its not easy for me juggling work and hunting I'm actually super relieved now that l can get back to "normal " now sometimes l really get obsessed with hunting and it effects life lol.
Ohh every serious hunter let's it effect them lololl. Or l guess your not serious.
Anyway good luck lm relieved and happy as all but now lm jealous of you being out there hunting big buck and l got doe tags.
Have a great day l gotta go to work and get money to mount not one but 2 deer heads now. !

Joe...that's a heck of a dilemma...Been there!!
I use to keep my local Taxidermist in business!!!
Good luck with the mounts!!

I went this morning looking for the wide 10 or the drop 8. Saw neither. Nothing but slick heads and I can't shoot anymore of those this season. The Mrs. wants another one for the freezer. So I guess I'll persevere :eusa-doh:, and keep looking for one of my target bucks!!

Actually I'm ready to shoot some hogs. They have become a pest on one of the places I hunt. I've got a son-in-law chomping at the bit to go slaughter them. But he ain't allowed to go blast pigs on that property because I bow hunt that place only!!! I've been trying to get his tail to buy a bow, but he's too cheap!!

Actually he's my "favorite"....just don't tell him!! We actually have the same birthday....many decades apart!!

Being lucky helps. Putting in the time and effort eventually pays off. If it was easy everyone would do it! My wife says I live to hunt!!
I tell her... "Nope, there's fishing too"!!

Congratulations on a buck well earned!! Can't wait to see them mounted!!! Enjoy the fruits of your labor!!

Congratulations also. Its kind of a strange feeling to have been successful, but now w/o a buck tag. Its very hard for me to shoot that last buck.
We have no hogs here but when successful on that last one, I’m going after varmints. An option for you?

How about the Razorbacks in Fayetteville???

Trust me, they are there, they just haven't taken over yet!! The Red River area of the Oklahoma/Texas/Arkansas borders are FULL of them!! When they do, no more Turkeys. No Quail. They'll eat young fawns even. They are a pest!! No hunting license is needed to hunt hogs in Texas anymore. Just landowner's permission.
And yes, we have Coyotes, Bobcats and the occasional Mountain Lion. And TPWD just released a group of Black Bears into one of the refugees about 30 miles south of me.

You can basically find anything you thought you might ever want to hunt here in Texas, as long as your pockets are deep enough!!

In pa we have state game lands and lf you hunt deer the northern and western ones are very large and some very good hunting. You can literally get lost on some.
Here in the suburbs plenty of big deer too but you have to be very creative and resourceful to hunt thats how l have adapted.
A friend of mine moved to Texas to be where "the good hunting is" and found it very difficult to hunt..number 1 is he was an outsider and a lot of the land was sewed up with high dollar hunting clubs that were not in his blue collar budget.
Eventually he found a good spot but it wasn't easy peasy as he thought.

Most of the land in Texas is privately owned. That can effect a hunter's budget pretty darn quick. TPWD does have what is called "Wildlife Management Areas" within the State. These are broken down into 2 categories. Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is a draw hunt system on privately owned lands and management areas own by TPWD. Some contain excellent Whitetail and Mule Deer. Others include Antelope, Elk, Exotics and even Desert Bighorn Sheep. A lot of these hunts are in rough, rocky terrain where you better be in good shape. These are allotted on a lottery draw system each spring.
Contact TPWD for more information. Last time I looked these are open to any licensed hunter in any state.

Type 2 hunts are issued thru a service called Public Hunting Permits. This covers roughly a million acres of land spread all across Texas. Texas is divided up into 7 different regions by TPWD. A list of these regions can be found on TPWD's website. I live in Area 3, which is called the "Piney Woods", imagine that!!
Information on these public land hunts is available thru TPWD.

Texas is a huge expanse of Real Estate. Nearly 1,000 miles across and 1,000 top to bottom. 270,000 square miles. I can actually drive from my house to Chicago faster than I can drive from my place to El Paso.
There are plenty of opportunities to hunt Texas. You just gotta do the research.

Nice!!

So do you think he is a result of Gary Alt's changes?

When I was a kid up there in the early to mid 80's bucks like that were few and far between, and they were killing 90% of all bucks with the 2 week buck only gun hunt. We hunted a lot of game lands in Somerset and Bedford counties.

Keith the antler restrictions definitely are working in my opinion the deer l hunt are suburban mostly and get big because they are just good at hiding.
Almost 90 percent of the bucks l get year after year are a result of the rut otherwise they would be back in the little Woodlot where they normally hide and out of reach.
I'm lucky to have very unpressured property to hunt it definitely helps .
As you said the average person here just wants to kill a 5 point and go home. Lol.
