Tag soup.....again

Post by Reinyrooster »

Well 2016 I had quadruple bypass at the beginning of the season so that year was a write-off. 2017 and 2018 I was kept busy with other responsibilities that seriously limited my time in the filed and I came up empty-handed. 2019 I got a new hip on opening day so that year was another write-off.
This year looked promising as we scored a new farm to hunt. Opening day I was sitting in a ground blind at first light.....I am a meat hunter and had a doe tag so I was ready to take anything that came along. Had two does feeding on the corn feed at 18 yards......just as I am starting to pull the trigger on my Micro ( that hadn't killed anything yet ).....the broken frame of the ground blind collapses on me and my shot goes wide. All I see after that are the two white flags waving goodbye.
Fast forward to the early December shotgun/muzzleloader controlled hunt.....my hunting buddy goes around to the far side of the bush and starts pushing the bush. I am set up along the fence line and everything went according to plan.....well almost everything. My buddy kicks up a decent buck that runs along the fence line, jumps the fence into the filed where I am at 25' and continues running across the field. I raise my CVA and pull the trigger.....well I TRY and pull the trigger....and it won't fire. The hammer will not come back. I'm almost crying as I watch him trot away across the filed. Ended up having to take the CVA into the gunsmith to get fixed.
That was the last time we have seen deer on the property.
Now I have to reach high into the cupboard to get the seasoning I need to flavor up that tag soup........ :x :x :x :x

Geez, talk about bad luck, strange how sometimes things just seem to happen in bunches.
Look at it this way, at least you didn't fall out of a tree stand and die as a result of the gun barrel impaling you like happened to a hunter this year, things could be worse!!

When Murphy's law hits there is nothing you can do. If you lived closer to me I'd give you half of my deer meat. I hope 2021 is kind to you!

.....I have a great recipe for tag soup....I have perfected mine over the last three years...the only problem is gets a little harder and harder to swallow!

.....one side effect of the soup is that causes grown men getting close to retirement to look for his own hunting retirement property!....family is going today to see a piece of property in NYS for the second time....the property has provided many wall mounts to the family that has owned it for the last 50years....

1835 days away!for full retirement!

Sorry you ran into those problems but both should never have happened. You should always check out and fix your gear every year before taking it into the field.

That is a bummer! Sounds like coyotes are in your near future. There’s also geese! It’s not over until it’s over!

Ya, It's been an "interesting" season. Planning on taking my frustrations out on the coyote population. My new Savage 22-250 is aching for the opportunity.
BTW Happy New Year everyone.

Success contains many elements ...you need the deer to be there big or small .. you need the and skill and equipment kill them .
And the all important... time to kill them. Sometimes you also need a little luck too.
I was extremely lucky this year l have a decent number of productive property's to hunt and being within 20 minutes away allows a lot of time wasted on driving to be spent hunting thats important.
I have logged over 47 evenings hunting after work and mornings in October and November Saturdays.
I got 2 nice bucks but definitely worked hard for them.
No guarantees in hunting thats why it's so cool.
I have had many sucky years too in my earlier years.
I have friends that hunt a fraction of my time and every year get bigger deer than me and in my opinion are sloppy hunters...ohh well just have to suck it up.
Happy new year. Joe z
