Turkey Set Up

Post by flinthead »

Image

I pulled my game camera card the other day and had these guys coming in to my food plot... the first one looks like he has a double beard... he will be my number one target in about 5 weeks,,, Opening day is March 22. I swore off bowhunting for turkeys about 10 years ago after many failed attempts... knocked a few feathers out a time or two, but that's about it. This year however I'm going after them with my Ibex only...  My set up will be a 438 grain Lumen-Arrow with a 2" Rocket Meatseeker at around 300 fps. What will you be taking into the turkey woods this spring??

I've killed around 50 gobblers over the years, just none with the bow... yet :)

Hunted for years and killed a bunch of birds with a Knight TK2000... that was a lot of fun!!

One from the TK2000 days...

I roosted this bird the night before... got in on him about 30 minute before daylight... when he hit the ground, I called once. He came running in to about five yards... I had to raise the muzzleloader and shoot him all in one motion. I believe he was going to run me over!! As you can see by the looks of his head, the TK shot really tight groups at five yards... 8)

Man... I looked a lot younger back then... :eusa-think: 25 years on the Highway Patrol will get you!!

We have had 4 birds coming to our bird feeders all winter. I call them the cleanup crew, they dig through the snow and clean up every bit of spilled seed. A few days ago the big flock showed up, about 25-30 birds of every shape and size. Our season starts with youth day on May 1st. We have acquired quite a collection of bows since last year. We have 5 hunters and each person has their own Excal. We are all very excited for spring, and turkey season. Had better luck calling last year and have a few new tricks for this year. Good luck to all on your spring hunts.
Take care

I never used the meatseaker but lt looks pleanty nasty.
My turkeys here come n go also fly back n forth to NJ over the river quite regularly l never was able to hunt a "specific " bird as l do buck.
Although l love a big gobbler l eat my turkeys and already have 3 mounted already so no need for trophy hunting but l will often pass on birds simply to extend my season longer if l don't have a second tag.
I have to give much of my crossbow success to the doghouse blind allowing me to be hidden as much as the "shooting them " part.
The last 2 years l really enjoyed taking my brother out to get his first 2 crossbow turkeys.
A couple years ago turkeys were everywhere until opening day then disappeared till 2 weeks passed.
Turkey hunting is the ultimate patience tester that's why it's so cool.
Bring a full charge for your phone to keep buisy or some magazines it's all fun.
Often l put my head up from reading and ...a turkey is just hanging out in the decoy setup.
Good like flinthead l hope the ibex flexes it's camo limbs for you!!!

Nice! I’ve always liked the Doghouse... I usually catch them on sale each year and just leave them out all season. If something happens to it, no big loss.

Exactly ....there are many better blinds out there but none as good ,portable and cost effective....l wish l could learn to fold one correctly...lol. l get em down half folded and bunjie em that's it... or l will have a fit.l never have to carry one that far.

It is funny watching someone fold up a doghouse blind. I know my dad & brother struggle with them. My dad will put just put it in his shed unfolded. He watches me fold it up & just scratches his head. I could teach him how to do it, but it's one thing I can do better than him. I need something to feel superior about. :)

Just twist & don't overthink it too much always works for me. They are nice to pack in & out & still do the job!
