Ticks, ticks ticks,

Post by Hatchet »

Well this morning I had to treat all our outdoor clothes with a Permethrin spray. We have always seen a few ticks a year but this year the ticks are everywhere. We bought some spray planning on using it on our blinds but after a fishing trip yesterday me and my oldest daughter pulled over 20 ticks of us. I put all of our clothes on the fence and commenced to spraying. I have sprayed our blinds, chairs, and the ground where we set the blinds up.

Is there anything else we should do to keep clear of these nasty buggers?

Thanks and take care

This is what ya call the "East Texas Tick Patrol"!!!

These guys eat them like candy!! I think they'd rather eat ticks than any thing else!!
They also don't like snakes and will kill them too.
And they are a good "security system" to alert you of anything strange on the property!!
We enjoy them!!

AJ it's funny you should mention the Guineas. I ordered some Guinea keets a few months ago to put in with our flock of chickens and they will be here next week. We had a few adult Guineas over the years and man they are very protective. When our roosters would take to terrorizing my daughters those Guineas would come running to the girls rescue. Also the Guineas were great watchdogs. We enjoy them too, they are a really cool bird!
Take care

We are not by any stretch of the imagination over run with ticks but we have them. One year I go I got 2 and the dog had several. Permethrin as you obviously know is what you use on your clothes etc. But tick tubes will get rid of most of your ticks. Mice carry ticks and move them around and mice are always looking for nesting material. The drier lint or cotton balls in tick tubes laced with permethrin kills the ticks. I can't tell you how fast this works but for sure, I would spray the the ground inside and around any place where you stop and hang out like your blind. From everything I've read, tick tube are the way to go. I am mixing 200 ml to one liter of SFR of water for tick tubes. The higher concentration gives more residual action. I put the tubes every 6 feet or so in the forest edge.
BTW, Opossums eat ticks as well.

I spray all my clothes that are going to be worn a day or so before the season starts. Socks, pants, shirt, hat, gloves and face mask. My boots are rubber. All I do not spray is my underwear. No ticks since I started doing so. I have watched many die as they are trying to climb up my pants legs and a bonus is it keeps mosquitoes off also. :)

Robert, what percentage do you use? I read that you shouldn't spray clothing that is in contact with your skin so I've only been spraying the my pants from the knee down. I think ill be spraying all of my pants now.

I use the Permethrin spray too!! Works great in my humble opinion!

I spray my boots, pants and other outer wear. I also spray my "pop up" blinds with the stuff. The results I see are no ticks and no "skeeters" either!! :D
When I start bow hunting down here, some evening temps can be in the 90's. Skeeters and tick along with biting flies can be a real pain!!
I just spray my stuff about 3-5 days before I use it!

No ill effects...yet!!!

I just got done prepping my turkey hunting clothing.
What i have been doing is spraying mostly the points where they would enter, outside tops of boots, outside tops of socks, inside and outside bottom of pants about 6", inside and outside waistband of pants about 6", outside zipper area, spray a band completely around the outside of both legs just below crotch area, spray inside and outside of coat and shirt tails about 6". spray inside and outside of cuff area about 6", spray inside and outside of collar about 6", spray both sides all along front closure weather zipper or buttons, spray a band around the outside of the coat and shirt just under armpits, spray cuffs of gloves on outside, spray hat band inside and outside, and lightly spray the outside of the face mask.
Never had a tick on me since doing it like this, every area they would need to gain access is covered, I use the Sawyers Permethrin that I buy at Walmart.

I mix my own and come up at about .010% instead of the recommended .005%. I have been using it for at least 30 years maybe longer and have had it all over me and it has never bothered me that I can tell. Just let it dry completely.

That is EXACTLY what you get in the pasture swamps in Parry Sound where we moose hunt. It may ad 30 minutes, but I wall around them now for that exact reason
