Favorite Cold Weather Gear

Post by CT.HNTR »

With the current heat wave across North America I thought it was a good time to discuss cold weather gear. I was hoping people could share what their favorite gear is to wear when it's well below freezing and you are doing a six hour sit in the stand?

Please share your thoughts on base layers, socks, boots, mid layers outer layers along with bibs or pants. How many people use stick on air activated body and toe warmers?

Skin tight wicking base layer
ECWCS fleece layer (no idea what that stands for)
Redhead tundra suede bibs and jacket.
Fleece neck gator and beanie , thin gloves and a mitt muff.
Thick merino wool socks. No cotton.

I only use toe warmers, because they are adhesive. I stick one on each foot and one each on the OUTSIDE of my midlayer right on my kidneys. For long sits if you put it below the midlayer it burns a mark into your skin for a few days, and that cant possibly be good.

Good for hours. For coyote hunting I use the same setup, sometimes white gear. But I seldom go out anymore if it's below -15°C. Just not worth the effort for yotes.

Heated insoles and my Milwaukee heated hoodie! Won't hunt in cold weather without them!

I picked up this lightly used predator camo cold weather gear and hoping it does the job!

Well that explains that! Great gear, but you better not have to walk more than 50 steps or you'll be soaked in sweat

I prefer to walk in lightly clothed so when I get to my stand I’m freezing almost, then I settle down and suit up. I’m a huge fan of Game Hide insulated outer parka over bibs. Toe warmers in the boots and hand warmers in the pockets.

For this tall guy , Cabelas MT50 Gore Tex - Thinsulate bibs and parka is hands down my favorite . I can appreciate the tall sizing offered at a small upgrade cost.
MT50 features good zippers, numerous pockets and underarm zips to vent some air.

To keep my hands from freezing I like a good hardwarmer waist muff ( again by Cabelas ) using one or two chemical heaters combined with a thin liner glove for trigger control.

A fleece neck gaiter keeps the chill off your neck pretty good.

My Big Buddy heater in my ground blind seems to be the only way I can sit for longer than an hour or two…

Same here buddy heater and a good pair of Alpaca socks. Heater keeps the upper body warm but the feet are on the ground so it can be cold when not moving around.

It was develpoed for Seal Team 2, they are the "cold weather experts". It was tested in Antarctica. Should keep the average person quite warm. I seldom ever use what I have, never gets cold enough. :eusa-snooty: I did use it during the "Great Freeze" down here when it was -6. Worked like a charm!!

Standard atire on COLD days, Remington insulated bibs with a Remington Insulated coat. Mojo handwarmer with a couple of "hot hands" on days below freezing. And a good pair of insulated Danner boots with wool socks. I stay plenty toasty!!

Exactly what janesy said, right down to the hand warmer behind kidneys (inlcuding 2nd degree burns after my first outing). I use polypro liners under wool sox. Standard days, no gaiter needed. For snowy days, I put zippered hood onto my parka. Used to wear traditional leather boots with thinsulate, but now use swamp boots w/800gm thinsulate. In tree stand, I put down carpet square to keep wind off boot soles. This setup has kept me comfortable for 3 hour sits in 20' treestand down to 5F (no wind).
