Welcome to license/permit/tag/stamp season.

Post by DuckHunt »

Each year when we reach July, the new seasons dates come out and the scramble is on to obtain all of the necessary licenses, tags, permits and stamps to prepare for the upcoming season. Sometimes I think they make things complex or expensive to discourage hunting.

It looks like this year I'll be shelling out $773.50 (USD) in fees to fuel my habit. It's more of a way of life than a hobby, so it's a necessary cost to me. But it is a cost none the less, and one that always seem to be increasing. One of these years I'm going to be retired and I hate to think that my hunting world will shrink somewhat as I limit my expeditions to save money. But, that is probably going to be the case.

Here is a run down of my shopping list.

West Virginia (Resident)
$35 Sportsman Permit (Hunt+Fish)
$21 Extra Archery Buck Tag
$25 Federal Duck Stamp
$0 HIP Permit

Virginia (Non-Resident)
$111 Hunting License
$86 Deer/Turkey License
$31 Archery License
$31 Muzzleloader License
$31 Bonus Deer Permit
$10 Virginia Duck Stamp

Arkansas (Non-Resident)
$110 Small-Game Hunting License
$180 5-Day All-Game License
$35 Arkansas Duck Stamp
$12.50 NWR Quota Gun Hunt Permit
$5 WMA Quota Gun Hunt Permit Application (Lottery)
$0 WMA Permit
$0 HIP Permit
$50 Fishing License
Total: $773.50 (USD)

I'm sure there are others that have it even worse than I do. How bad is the cost of the right to hunt/fish in your area?

You only have one inning in life and its money well spent the way I see it. It's a pleasure reading your tag list..quite impressive if you dont mind me saying so. :D

I expect to read some of your success stories and see the smile on your face once the season starts.

Good luck mate!

Look at it this way, all these "taxes" are fueling the economy, and that's a good thing. However, what irks me is that although some of the funds help run and subsidize society, a lot is misused and squandered. That's the nature of public collected funds.

Sadly, that's the world we live in. :(

Fortunately we have the choice of whether or not we wish to participate.

I used to pay $781.00 to hunt Mississippi as a non resident every year. What drove me crazy was that was only for three bucks . You couldn't kill does unless you were hunting private land or in a club. The price has gone down a little and recently you are allowed to take does now but it drove me nuts for years. Always felt like having a drivers license but had to drive 20 mph slower because you lived out of state.

When I first saw your cost I thought holy crap then I saw you were hunting 3 states so that’s not bad at all. In Ohio I bought 10 year hunting & fishing license for 180.00 each then our deer tags run from 15.00 to 31.00 depending on the type of tags you buy. I just buy the deer tags as I need them they’ve made it so easy I can actually buy the tags while I’m hunting in the field if needed. Years ago when I use to hunt Pennsylvania it was actually cheaper as a non resident to hunt there than my home state good luck looks like you’ll be busy hunting all them places.

I spent $10 to apply for a Missouri elk tag and I was not one of the five who were drawn. Other than that, as a landowner with more than 75 acres I get 4 archery deer tags, two archery turkey tags, three firearms deer tags and two firearms turkey tags - all at no charge. It's good to be a landowner hunter in Missouri!

I'm also a landowner with over 50 acres. Unfortunately, I'm only allowed one deer tag, for which I have to pay full price. The same hold true for all other licences and tags. Even if I farmed the land, I'd only get a small discount off the regular resident price.

Only in Ontario you say, pity.

I remember buying a deer licence for $10, and you got a bear tag as a free bonus. That was many "moons ago", so I'm dating myself. Today the price is just under $50 for just the deer licence, considering inflation, that's not bad. Besides, the price of the licence is the least of the cost of hunting. So I'm not complaining, if I was cheap, I'd complain about the ancillary costs.

All kidding aside, I don't begrudge living in Ontario, since one deer is more than my wife and I can eat in a year.

I could not pay enough money to feel the way I do when hunting, especially hunting with friends and seeing the happy look on their faces when they succeed.

I could never post about myself being cheap and crying about paying full price in Ontario for a deer or bear tag costing less than 50 bucks.

Some people wil never realize that you can't pay enough money to feel what you feel in those moments.

Minnesota Resident:
Spring Turkey License: $34
Deer Archery License: $34
Deer Firearm License: $34
Deer Muzzleloader License: $34
(can only tag 1 buck total with these 3 licenses)
2X Deer Anterless Bonus Tags: $18 each
Fishing License: $26

If I hunt Wisconsin this year I'll get half-price nonresident licenses since it has been over 10 years since I bought a license there. Wisconsin has far better management and a better deer license structure than my home state of Minnesota. And Wisconsin is crossbow inclusive as well.

I bought a lifetime hunting and fishing license back when they started selling them for $500 (late 90s?) and they cover me for pretty much everything except Fed Duck stamps. I do have to go online every year and purchase my deer and turkey harvest record and my resident waterfowl stamp and sip permit. Total cost is 0 as they are free for lifetime license holders. Reason for making you get them every year is they ask questions about how many ducks, doves etc. you killed and if you saltwater fished during the year. Best $500 I ever spent. :)

Well...new license don't go on sale here until the end of August.

That'll be around $70 bucks by the time I add all the "extra" permits to mine!! But that is for what is called a Super Combo Resident License. That's all my tags except Federal Duck Stamp and it includes my fishing license and tags also!!! Out-Of-Stater's run like $350 (I think), just for the tags. That's the cheap part in Texas!! :eusa-think:

Today (07/24/21) I put in for 3 different "draw hunts" here in Texas. It's like playing the lottery, only worse!!!
I've been putting in over 14 years for a Pronghorn Permit in the Rita Blanca National Grasslands up in the Texas Panhandle. Maybe this is the year? :eusa-snooty:

This spring (2022) I'll put in for one of the few Eastern Tukey hunts up around Caddo Lake.
Hunting the Rio Grand species is as simply as sitting at the deer feeder in 2/3rds of the state!! It's the Eastern's that are the trick!!
Told ya I was a glutton for punishment!!! :eusa-deadhorse:
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming "Wow, What a Ride!

Indiana lifetime comprehensive holder here. In 2001, I forked out $708, and that's everything except Fed duck stamp and trapping. It has paid for itself a few times now.
