Don't know about Magellan but I use the Garmin etrex legend and find it reliable. It also has W.A.A.S. in it for extra accuracy. Lots of features.

Garmin E-Trex, very simple to use, inexpensive, small, comparitively long battery life, and ample features for most uses. The display is easy to understand and the unit has a back light feature for use in low light conditions. Like all or most entry level units, it doesn't have an electronic compass, so make sure you continue to carry a good compass with you when you're in the bush.

The Legend model has the compass. You should always carry a compass with you just to varify your GPS. Also in case your batteries die. You will need a regular compass if you're walking through heavy bush/forrest because you'll lose satellite signals.

A knowlege of compass use can't be replaced by a GPS.
Your GPS can fail, compass won't.
Having said that, a GPS is very handy, and super cool. You can use a fix to get another person to within a couple of yards of some spot, such as a tree stand.

I use a Lowrance GlobalMap 100, a medium cost GPS that does it all. But still use a compass and map with it.

Magellen 315. Has a good many features, price isn't too bad either. And like the other said, bring a compass with you! I nearly paid with my life thinking a GPS was all I needed. I was fortunate that I had a compass in my first-aid kit, otherwise I might not be here.

Signals get lost in heavy cover. Without a magnetic compass you must orient yourself with the sun/moon to determine NSEW, impossible under heavy cloud cover. Yes if you start walking the GPS will figure out which way is which, but if you combine dense brush with cloud cover you can be in trouble.

I have to go with Digger. Globalmap 100 is excellent. Plugs into your computer too. Managed to create a map of my hunting area by transfering the trails recorded in my GPS to Autocad. Now I use my GPS to mark major deer trails, deer sightings, turkey sightings. After a while you really get to pattern the animals. As far as relying on the GPS to "save your life" back it up with a compass!!!

Colour screen is a gimick IMHO. Look for functionallity first and foremost.
