You Ever Use One of These??

Post by AJ01 »

Recently I was given a new "Dead Down Wind" ozone car deodorizer. This is the "Dead Zone Dzone2Go" model that plugs into your vehicle.
I know that a lot of times we eat in our vehicles on the way to and from the hunting lease. We stop and we buy gas, some even smoke. (I don't), but I'll admit it, Copenhagen is my vice, just as bad... But smells get into our hunting rigs or just our everyday ride that you drive to the lease. :eusa-doh:

Image

Ever think about the smells in your ride? I haven't plugged this in yet. But was wondering if any of you guys used these, or are they just a gimmick to "catch" hunters? :eusa-think: I recently watched a video on "scent killers" verses a Police K-9. Five (5) differnt brands and types were tested.
NONE of the scent killers beat the nose of the dog!!  Even the Ozonics couldn't fool the dog. It never took the K-9 longer than about 5 seconds to "find" the hiding human. And the "hunter" hide inside enclosed cardboard boxes at different distances!! :eusa-doh: With multiple boxes in view. The handler simply gave the command to "seek" and the K-9 had no problem finding anyone.
And yes...the K-9 NEVER got to watch the "hunter" go hide. It was all done with his nose!!
Some commentors on the video said the dog could hear their heart beating. If that's the case, couldn't the DEER???

So...what's your opinion on these?
As hunting season has started or will be starting shortly for most of us, I think all are looking for the "next best thing" to give us an edge in the woods.
Or do we rely on the same factors our forefather did and play the wind and the weather. Use cover to our advantage. And NEVER underestimate the eyes, ears and noses of our quarry???

Just "food for thought" from the Redneck in East Texas?

Ozone will attach to scent molecules and break them down into hydrogen and carbon etc. , so there is no doubt they work. But to your point...just how effectively??????? enough to fool a deer's nose? Maybe...probably sometimes...should you bank on it and setup in a wrong wind...probably not. But that might work. :D

I do both. Try to control my scent AND setup appropriate for the wind conditions. Just don't plug that into your car and drive 2 hours to your hunting lease. Breathing OZONE is not too good for you I don't think. You could run it in your car while your not in it.

Yes...I forgot to mention that YOU DO NOT use this while driving around in your vehicle. That's a definite "No-No"!!
Good catch there Keith!!

Face it, WE STINK!
Even a coyote will try to circle downwind to pick up scent, if a deer is downwind it will probably smell you no matter what.
I remember guys wives saying that they stank after coming back from remote hunting camps in Maine, I was good for a bath in an ice cold stream or broke thin ice in a pond about every 3 days. We did a lot of still hunting in mountains, and drug deer out, we were ripe and still shot deer!

I've never tried one but wondered how well they work. I'm guessing they may help in certain situations, but I'm not sure if its enough to make a difference. Like you witnessed, its a lot easier to fool a humans nose than a deer or a dog.

I have to climb a couple hundred feet in elevation to reach my stands. Unless they can come up with something that will overcome sweat, hunting high and playing these swirling winds are about the only options I have.

No matter what, it will make your vehicle smell better. I use one for my hunting clothes and gear and such. I use it for alot of things that you don't normally put in a washing machine and works fine. I never used that unit because I just put my big unit in my truck and just let it rip.

Can't hurt try it. My best way of solving the scent problem to this day is still using lots of doe p spray and a shower before the hunt.

Joe...
May be I'm a "gimmick guy" but like you, I shower before my hunts. I use the DDW bar soap and the DDW antiperspirant+deoderant. My clothes get a dose of DDW scent killer, and my boots get a good smearing of Conquest Scents "Evercalm".
I actually had a buck a few years back walk my path to the blind with his nose to the ground like a dog. I guess he was following the "Evercalm".
Now he's on my wall!! :eusa-doh:

I store my clothes in a tote that I have filled with bags of cedar shavings. About 2 day before I hunt, I take them out and hang them outside away from everything and spray them with the DDW at that time.

My wife says I'm OCD, I say the freezer is full...hush!!

I use their clothes storage bags, dress on site, and shower before heading out. I still get busted once in a while because we stink from our bodies. The wind is your best friend, period. JMHO. 8)

Yes Sir Dan!!!

You're absolutely right...WE STINK!!! :eusa-deadhorse:

I don't think our forefathers had all the fancy stuff to kill odor!!! Not being too blunt, but I don't think too many of them bathed too often!! :eusa-doh:

The wind is the key. Without a doubt. I was hog hunting the other morning. Wind out of the west. I could hear the hogs coming from the north, grunts, huffs and squeals like a freight train load was coming in.
Wind shifted and starting blowing out of the south. The hogs were almost there...then they were GONE!!! :wtf: Not a sound. Just GONE. Never saw a hog that morning. :eusa-snooty:
I think the real key is multipe stand locations on your property so you can absolutely "play the wind"!!
I've actually had deer walk within 5-10 yards fo my stand and never know I was there, only to pass on the "up wind side" about 100 yards away, and suddenly stop, blow, and run like a demon was after them.

We all know the guy who smokes in his blind or stand. Kills deer all the time. Laughs at us because we try to 'cover" our scent.
Is he a better hunter than us? Nope, just REAL lucky!! If you see him buying lotto tickets...get the same numbers he does!! :eusa-dance:

Just me humble thoughts on all of this....

I use ozone for my hunting clothes. I figure it cant hurt and as an autotech i have an ozone generator for vehicle applications. It does remove car scent like mold, mildew, smoke etc. The only thing i would mention is that it can break down rubber and plastic prematurely (car interiors, zippers, buttons etc)

I wash my clothes in a hunting detergent that I have used for years because I have had so many close encounters I believe it works. When I quit trying to trick deer, I started seeing a lot more of them. Remember that the success rate for deer hunters is like 15%. That sure makes a lot of people want to buy success. Very few of these things make a big difference.
Do I use scents, yes, but very sparsely, deer know where deer are, you need to start thinking like a deer. Public land hunters have a hard road to travel for success because of all the other people that fall for some of the gimmicks. JMHO. Playing the wind is a simple concept that many do not get right.
