O/T Ruger No. 1

Post by flinthead »

Image

Got the old 30-06 Ruger No. 1 out this morning... this big body 7 point came in... and he looked like backstraps to me!! :D :D

I had to field dress him to get him out of a deep holler he ran down into... anyway,,, I saved his heart to cook tomorrow. I've never cooked or eaten deer heart... my plan is to clean it well so I only have pretty red meat with no fat or other tissue, soak it over night in buttermilk, bread it with salt and pepper flour then fry it medium rare in olive oil and butter with some onions and bell pepper... we'll see how it turns out... should be good!

Congrats on a fine buck flinthead. That heart recipe sounds delicious. Think I'll pass that one on to my personal chef!
Take care

Nice buck! Congrats!
Just curious as to what your “big bodied” bucks would weigh?
A big bodied buck up here in the north woods of New England would go 200 lbs+

Congratulations on a beautiful buck taken with a classic rifle !
My Ruger M77 from the 1980's with the tang safety in 30.06 has been my primary deer rifle since I was in my teens , it has never let me down.

Heavy for his rack… looked to be a three year old… should have had better horns! One of the reasons I shot him. We get big bucks in the 190 to 200lb range.
