My season is done - Updated!

Post by Species8472 »

Getting old i guess.

Took a nasty fall down a ravine on Oct 01 and it has now officially ended my 2021 season. Somehow my knee become infected and went septic. Now on IV antibiotics to be followed by surgery. Hopefully will be able to do some ice fishing when the time comes.

Good luck to all of you out there and please post your tales as i will be living vicariously. This will be the first time i have not filled at least one deer tag since 1982 and at least two tags every season since they started offering additionals. Going to have to start rationing my meat stocks to make it another full year. Fortunately last season was good to me with 4 deer and 3 bears between me and my boys so with a bit of planning we should make it without running out.

Update - Oct 30th, 2021:

Thanks for all the great replies everyone. Also a big shout out to those who have offered help - it is appreciated. Latest update:

- surgery was on the 21st and went well
- infection appears to be under control
- x-rays initially showed no bone damage but subsequent CT scan and MRI showed the tibia bone (large bone between knee and ankle) has a vertical split starting at the knee about 2/3s of the way down to the ankle
- vertical tibia fracture will apparently take 4 to 6 months to fully heal.

So hunting this fall is bust for sure but still optimistic about ice fishing by the end of January.

I hate that for you!
I've been hurt for over a year and it has made hunting difficult. I totally understand

Joe.....that is terrible news....but as always, it could have been worse....It makes one realized just how fragile life is....we think we are unstoppable until which time as we are stopped in our tracks!

....I hope that you have a rapid, full recovery with no side effects going forward.....

Joe, sorry to hear that! Legs and backs are what allow us to move around. Hopefully you can still work and play some! What a bummer! Get well soon!

Speedy recovery Joe!
I had a septic knee infection 2.5 years back and the 4 " harpoon needle used to take a sample deep inside was uncomfortable and the treatment lasted some time with daily IV antibiotic treatments noted.
Follow protocol and you'll be back in the saddle and may see you out late season.
Cheers!

Well that's a real bummer. I was trying to recover an animal in thick briars on steep terrain Tuesday morning and a couple times I thought I was going to do a header over some obstacles. So I'm aware how easy it can happen. I guess I was lucky enough to come out unscathed except for a few thorns.

Best of luck with the surgery. Follow the docs orders and you may be able to salvage some outdoor time before too long.

Sorry to hear it. Hoping you are on the fast track to recovery. Some of the guys with the greatest hunting stories are laid up this season. We'll be praying for ya and trying to fill the gaps with some of our own success stories. We may need to "fabricate" just a little!
Take care

Joe....I wish you a speedy recovery!!! I've had knee surgery on BOTH knees!! One of them twice!! It ain't fun. I completely empathize with you!!
Get the surgery out of the way. Rest! Follow Dr.'s orders!! Then rehab!! Oh what fun it is!! :eusa-doh:

Sorry you took a spill. Thankful it wasn't more serious!!

The season isn`t over . So with rehab you may get out in a limited function with help from your boys . :)
