Finally get 're done

Post by Reinyrooster »

Between surgeries, weather and some bad luck I haven't harvested a deer in about 5 years. Monday morning at first light this doe snuck up toward me along the edge of the standing corn....she blended in so well that I almost didnt see her. She got to about 35 yards away and turned facing me. She was about to bolt and was standing quartering hard toward me. I let the Remington bark and she took off. Waited for about 30 minutes and we took up the trail.....she only made it about 30 yards....it was a good shot into the lower throat, chest area. My son and I took a short butchering course a few years ago so I decided we would do the butchering ourselves.

I give up trying to get pics here...cant seem to get it to work.

Congratulations! Butchering for yourself can be very satisfying. I say this as someone who hasn't done it in years. Enjoy your venison. Corn fed deer are the best!

Back in the day I learned how to butcher a deer from a black and white 16 page manual published in 1972. It is very rewarding to DIY.

Found the manual at a garage sale for 5 cents :D

That manual is my best valuable second hand hunting find ever.. I still have it I might add but my wife's darn rabbit chewed all the edges for character.

Congrats on your hunt and rewarding freezer prep.
Cheers!
