West Texas Bow Hunting

Post by AJ01 »

Out in Irion County Texas the past few days doing a little herd thinning!
This is some rough, sparse country. The biggest tree out there is a Mesquite Tree and it's usually surrounded by Prickly Pear Cactus. Life is harsh out here to say the least!!

Image

When you do punch one of these critters, they will fling themselves into the LARGEST patch of Cactus they can find!!!
Then YOU get to spend the next few days pulling cactus needles out of your fingers and hands when you finish skinning 'em!! :wtf:

Anway I managed to help the boys with thier problem.

Image

Now I know someone might get offended by these pics, but it's just the way things are done in Texas.

I did manage to remove a a buck that needed to go. He'd been pushing the ladies around and wasn't "big enough" to do so, so he had to leave!! :eusa-naughty:

Image

He took a 2" cut Swhacker just at the top of his shoulder (entrance wound). He started backing up just as I touched the trigger in the Micro. Anyway...the Swhacker busted that shoulder, passed thru ribs on the off side and landed about 15 yards from where he was standing. He turned and sprinted off down the sendero for about 25 yards before crashing.
I wish I had taken pic of the exit would. It was the size of a baseball!!! :wtf: The younger boys all wanted to know what kind of GUN I shot him with.

Image

Anyway....the last "getaway" before Christmas. I still have a Buck tag left. :eusa-think: Might have to slip off after Christmas and see if I can punch that one. :eusa-shhh:
Just don't TELL my wife!!!

I'll keep you Xmas trip under my hat
Just make sure you share a story or two with us by the end of year.
Hope ya have a good set of precision tweezers on hand. Been there done that before.
Cactus needles are right darn uncomfortable and annoying, especially the wee ones you can feel but not see.

Let's just say that if a man wanted to, he could fill his 5 deer limit in one day!!!
Course most of them would NOT be bigger than a large Chihuahua!!! :eusa-doh: :eusa-naughty:

Management program was put in place about 4-5 years ago. Starting to see some 160-170 class Bucks in certain areas of the ranch. Protein is fed all year long, as much as they wanna eat. Corn feeders feed 3 times a day. The young two-legged bucks take care of most of the "thinning". And they make sure feeders stay full.
Someone has to do it!!
