Small Swamp Buck Down
Came in about 8:45am. I was set up on the land bridge where I saw the big buck. Almost passed on him but a needy family ask me to kill them a deer, so I shot him. I had a perfect setup in some downfall until he decided to do a 180 and start moving back into the brush thicket. Never showed any alarm was just foraging for acorns. I had to act fast as he was going downwind from me at the last moment. He was on the other side of a rise at about 30 yards, so I had to stand up and shoot over the brush. Shot too high and spined him so I had to cut his throat. The family was tickled to get the meat and ask for one more.
Didn't see the big buck.
My set-up spot-
Used the sled to get him out of the brush and mud-
In the cart before I put the sled back on-
Was a 1.5-mile trip back to the truck. Using the Sherpa cart and the sled I was able to get the deer and all my gear back in one trip. Not bad for an old man!!
I saw lots of fresh tracks and scrapes, so the deer are moving around more now that we had a cold snap. Will be back at it in the morning.

Congrats on the fine eating buck. Man, I'm impressed at your ability to overcome the logistical challenges to hunt that deep onto public land, with success, at your age. My younger brother and I are at least 20 years younger and the words "heart attack" were uttered more than once as we were dragging a swamp buck a mile across public land a month ago. It's no task for anyone without a strong will. Maybe for some of us hunting is just as important as life itself.

I am blessed to be in pretty good shape. This spot has only one way in unless you can walk on water. The land bridge is a major deer crossing so it's a no brainer to hunt it even with the 1.5-mile trip in.DuckHunt wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 4:34 pmCongrats on the fine eating buck. No other hunters in here. Too far for most guys and it's rough going across the one corn field I have
to cross.

Not done yet. There is a big 8 or 10 point out there. He's on my list.
Felt good to deliver the deer to a family that needed it.
