My hunting land is getting logged.

Post by Riflemanz »

Went to my hunting land and saw the logging crew cutting out the biggest trees on the land. There leaving the tops of the trees where they fall. This really messed up the deer trails. I guess I’ll have to wait for snow to see the new runways. The tree tops should make for good browsing for the deer in late winter. I’m going to take a break hunting until there done destroying the woods. Zero snow here in SE Wi, supposed to be *48 tomorrow. I can hunt until Jan-31st.

That sucks but, you're making the best choice. Let them do what they do and hopefully they'll leave you some clues.

Our hunting area had a selective cut, looked like a tornado went thru.

Really didn't bother the deer much. Suckdd when it came time to track. Laydowns /tops everywhere.

My ground was selectively logged 5 yrs ago. That year it was a mess. Tops everywhere all my lanes blocked etc. IMHO it sucks in the short term.

Deer loved it. Browse cover. Years following its only got better with all the fresh growth etc.

Same happened to us. It increased the bedding cover and the roads they had to clear for the skid steer actually made for some really nice, wide trails. Good luck!

One of my hunting places had a new pipeline put in spring of 2019. The pipeline that was there was replaced with a new system. The old pipeline right-of-way was about 50 yards wide. The new one is about 100 yards wide. Then a logging company can in and cut selective trees.

The pipeline heads thru an area that has long rolling hills with a small creek in the middle of the property. When the work started I figured "There Goes the Neighborhood"!!

The construction was finished about 3 weeks ago. The right-of-way was planted with wheat, rye, chicory and clover. Two ladder stands were placed about 400 yards apart near the newly planted "food plot".
Needless to say, "we have deer"!!

I have found out over the years that if you make a LOT of noise on a somewhat daily basis, Deer get accustomed to not only the sounds but the sights associated with them. I've actually been mowing and looked up to see Deer standing a 100 yards away looking at me!!
Go and start "sneaking around in the woods" and Deer will scatter. Why? Cause Predators sneak!!
Just my humble Redneck opinion!!
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming "Wow, What a Ride!

I'm going out hunting this afternoon and will see if the deer are eating the tops. I'll sit by a felled tree and setup an ambush if one comes thru.I still have a doe and buck tag to fill.

Do you hunt other animals? Could be a good woodcock or rabbit spot next year.

Many many times we heard the phrase "follow the chainsaws" when we hunted Maine, the new cuts were a magnet to deer for a few years, first it was the fresh tops and then the new growth, good luck!

Agreed. I belonged to an Ohio hunt club for years and the land was leased by a forestry company that clear cut for wood pellets meaning everything was flat out gone. After every clear cut, there were lots of does. The following couple of years there were more. I cannot think of a better scenario for hunting. I plant a food plot to attract deer so the food plot is bait for bait as it were. Your bait being new growth attracting does which are bait for bucks.

I was out Saturday and there are a bunch of heavy used trails already. I haven't seen a rabbit out there in years. Too many yotes! Only game birds I've seen are doves. I'm going to try some no till food plot seeds.
