Done for Now

Post by ko4nrbs »

Was going hunting tomorrow but the rain has really caused me some setbacks. The sloughs are up too high now and the cornfields are so muddy it would be difficult to cross them. Calling it quits until this fall.

I learned a lot about the Wildlife refuge and the Sipsey Wilderness. Will have a real head start for next season. Working out the logistics of hunting these areas was my biggest challenge. It's all good now and I am anxious to get back at it.

Tasks for next season:
1. Put in some mock scrapes to hopefully steer the deer along my shooting lane.
2. Locate good trees for my climbing tree stand along the shooting lanes.
3. Scout for more spots to hunt in the refuge so no matter which direction the wind is coming from I have a place to hunt.
4. Practice with the Exomax at 50 yards. In the past I never had a shot over 40 yards. That's changed in the refuge.
5. Read all I can find on hunting in swamps.

Thanks, guys, for riding along with me. Posting my hunts helps me work out the problems as I type.

Have a great 2022 fellas!!

Take some time to scout new areas now if you can before it greens up again. Always find it easier to spot trails, rubs etc during the winter time and you don't have to fight the snakes and mosquitoes.

That's my plan. Got a lot of territory to cover.

My biggest challenge so far has been discovering where the deer bed and travel. Finally found a peninsula with a small land bridge. That's where I saw the 8 or 10 point and killed the spike. I have learned the deer use all the waterways and sloughs to their advantage. You have to ambush them as they travel to and from the food sources. My task is to locate more bedding areas to try and find out where all the does are hanging out.

Hammocks of land above the water line will be their bedding area. The smaller they are makes is worse to ease onto with them. They have no problem swimming to them. Water is usually deeper than chest waters, don't ask just things i learned being young n dumb. Swamp deer like being nocturnal. I have dug pits n ambushed them. I have watched deer swim half a mile to n from the hammocks. Once you pattern them then its much easier to set up on them

For what ever reason I have seen deer swim across the river at my hunting spot in NE Oklahoma. Pretty wide and was swift but it didn’t seem to bother them. I miss hunting there.
