PeTa Visits the KFC in Evansville Indiana..

Post by Woody Williams »

This is about 13 miles from my house. I sure wish I knew they were going to be there. I'd have went down for a box lunch.

I would have ate a chicken leg right in front of that fake chicken..

Finger licking good....

KFC fed up with PETA tactics

By LIBBY KEELING Courier & Press staff writer 464-7450 or [email protected]
November 30, 2004

As PETA's crippled chicken mascot joined a few protesters below, a Kentucky Fried Chicken employee changed the restaurant's marquee to read: "Try our variety pack bucket $9.99."

Monday's hour-long demonstration began at noon outside the restaurant at U.S. 41 and Covert Avenue. The protest was part of a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' 15-city tour encouraging a boycott of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

According to campaign coordinator Ben Goldsmith, the crippled chicken mascot and its accompanying wheelchair illustrate PETA's assertion that chickens raised by KFC suppliers are bred and drugged to grow so large their legs can't support their own weight.

"People are supporting a company that has done nothing to stop some of the worst animal abuses on the factory farm and in the slaughter house," said Goldsmith, who works at PETA headquarters in Norfolk, Va.

A restaurant manager declined to comment on the protest or provide his name shortly after the demonstration ended. A statement from Bonnie Warschauer, KFC spokeswoman, follows:"PETA has disparaged our brand and misrepresented the truth about our responsible industry-leading animal welfare standards. KFC is committed to the humane treatment of chickens. We don't own any poultry facilities and our suppliers are acting responsibly. "We believe enough is enough. We want PETA to know that their corporate terrorist activities won't be tolerated."

PETA bases its allegations on undercover investigations, Goldsmith said. Those investigations, he said, have found chicks raised by KFC suppliers having their beaks sliced off with hot blades so they will not peck themselves or others in cramped conditions. In slaughter houses, Goldsmith said chickens are scalded alive because of inadequate stunning and slaughter techniques.

Jamie and Brandon Taylor, sociology majors at the University of Southern Indiana, are members of PETA who participated in Monday's protest.

"I think Evansville needs to open their eyes to the abuse farm animals suffer and particularly to the way KFC treats their chickens," Jamie Taylor said. "I'm just very against factory farming in general. KFC is really bad."
The boycott campaign began about a year and a half ago, Goldsmith said, more than a year after PETA began working with KFC to encourage change.

"This is a last resort," he said. "These types of abuses are routine and because KFC refuses to demand higher standards of animal welfare from their suppliers, these abuses continue."

The campaign's next stops will be in Kentucky, and Goldsmith said the boycott is having an impact.

"KFC sales have been down since this campaign launched. In fact, it's the only Yum Brands company whose sales are falling," he said.

Yum Brands Inc. operates KFC as well as Taco Bell, Long John Silver's, Pizza Hut and A&W All-American Food Restaurants.

According to The Associated Press, U.S. same-store sales increased 2 percent at KFC in the third quarter, ending a period of declines in 2003 and the first half of 2004.

I had a discussion with some PETA protesters in downtown Toronto a few weeks ago.

They had a tv playing videos showing chickens, cows, pigs, and sheep all receiving some pretty poor treatment.

I had a pretty tame discussion with one of the women. She certainly didn't appreciate my tales of hunting!

She didn't have an answer to my question as to why animal rights protesters seem to be more interested in cows, pigs and chickens being eaten as opposed to all the deer, birds, coons, foxes, rabbits, etc, that are losing their habitat daily as more and more land is swallowed up by houses.

I just got a blank stare from her.

sung to the tune of the talking heads' psycho killer

I can't seem to face up to the facts,
I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax,
This cruel insane man's job is getting me down,
A crazy chicken chasing me all over town

A psycho chicken
Better run run run run run run run away
Oooh oh oh oh aye aye ayee

I don't know just what to do,
He's got a crudge against Frank Pardue,
He's clucking a lot, but he's not saying anything,
I plucked him once! Why pluck him again?

A psycho chicken
Better run run run run run run run away
Oooh oh oh oh aye aye ayee

Cernel Sanders wants to judge his goose,
But psycho chicken still on the loose,

They caught him down in old hiyo,
They tied up his head and they put him in the oven,
They put him in a box right next to a road,
Put some plaster round his legs and someone took him home,
Ate him for lunch and it tasted real fine,
But the guy who ate him, he just lost his mind!

Psycho chicken
Better run run run run run run run away
Oooh oh oh oh
A psycho chicken

Better run run run run run run run away
Oooh oh oh aye aye aye aye aye aye ayeee.

Dumb Clucks

Got say these folks are so ignorant they don't even know the facts. First all broilers are raised and slaughtered so young they do not require a debeaking process. Most cycles for a normal broiler 2.2 kg live weight bird (1.57 Kg finished weight) is 42 days. Second fact, all birds are stunned ahead of having their throat cut. They are expected to life about 4.2 seconds, just long enough for the various sects to recite their appropraite prayers. At which point the birds usually travel another 50 feet on the shackels to be steamed (not boiled as even grandma realized how poor a method that was) for defeathering. Nuggets on the other hand are made from fowl (laying hens not broilers) that are 18 months old. Most layers have been debeaked to control some of the aggressive behavior caused by stress from overcrowding or poor feed. If the folks in the picture would like to take up a good cause they should be talking about square footage per bird. But that would require actually going to a farm a leaning about production.

I have had the pleasure of reviewing PETA policy papers on poultry production (5 of them). It is full of lies, and misinformation. It is unfortunate but one things we must contend with inthis day and age.

Now that the American elections are over, you are going to see more stories like this. Since these folks failed to save the world from Bush, they now must try to save the chickens from KFC.

I wish these people would put half as much energy into taking care of themselves, as they put into trying to take care of me!
