Rain

Post by grouse »

Like where a lot of you are, it has been hot and dry around here for about 6 weeks. The soybean crop at our farm is pathetic looking and what was a promising blackberry crop has dried up. Last night, on the news, they said we had heavy rain coming and it was needed because soil moisture was 10 - 15% of normal.

I heard some thunder overnight and when I turned the tv on this morning, they said we had gotten 5 - 8 inches of rain. We went from drought to flooding in a few hours. Amazing to see! It's still raining hard as I type this.

I saw on the news feed this morning that St.Louis had gotten like 8 inches and there were concerns of flooding in the area.
From one extreme to the other. I hope it don't wash y'all away!

I live about 8 miles west of Lebanon mo. and they got 4.8 inches of rain last night,
here at my place it rained enough to make spots in the dust, :eusa-snooty:
i'm worried that we are going to lose the acorn crop again this year, the deer are looking stressed
already, 102 today, looking like we have a chance thursday thru sunday for some rain :eusa-pray:

We've officially had over 9" now, a new 24 hour record (and it hasn't been 24 hours yet with more rain in the forecast). The old 24 hour record was 7.02" in 1915, when remnants of the famous Galveston hurricane came this far north.

Yes Sir, Galveston has had it's tail beaten off over the years. Starting the the deadly 1900 one. Killed what was it 6000-8000 folks. They aren't sure exactly how many died that day. Estimates by some have said upwards of 12,000 died.
The Island was crowded with tourist that time of year.
If you've never been to the island, and the Museum, I recommend it. Lots of historical sites.

We had a wet, cold & miserable spring.
Lost the cherries and peaches to frost, and many other plants due to drowning or cold.

Today, the fourth in a series of such, we are at 100 F.
This "rain forest" is suffering, and no end in sight...

Well here in NW Ga I have been waiting and waiting for the rains to stop so I can bushhog the field out back. Finally tried it yesterday and there was still an inch or so of standing water on the creek side of the field. Too hot to do it all so I just cut a little and am about to go try again. Maybe I can do the rest in August if it will quit raining.

I should have realized that whatever the 1915 Galveston hurricane was, it wasn't the big one. One of my best friends lives in the Houston suburbs and he took us down to Galveston on one of our visits. That museum and the story of the 1900 hurricane are fascinating. The whole island was pretty much wiped out in that event.
