Spray paint " dipping" ?

Post by gerald strine »

I started making a few of extra bolts for my 340 Mag I have them cut , shaft squared, front and back inserts squared.
and toying around with the idea of experimenting with a spray paint " dipping " job.
Not sure of the durability I would use a clear coat finish most likely.
I just thought it would be much easier , faster , more color choices , and much less cost than buying all the dipping stuff.
Found a few video's on You tube but have concerns about it rubbing off on the rail and will my supper glue work on the paint.
Has anyone tried this ? please chime in.

I’ve only painted arrows for my compound vertical bows. I did not prime. I cleaned with acetone and used good quality rattle cans that we use in the automotive industry. The only time I had any problems was when I laid the paint on too thick. In retrospect, I should have used a blush of primer which would have reduced the amount of paint needed.

Fletching adhesion to thin paint may be compromised the way I see it.

That is a concern of mine also.
I thought of fletching first and taping the veins off but may be hard to get a clean look.
I may just need to make one up and see what happens .
The you tube stuff was for vertical arrows and not much was said about adhesion.

You will need fingers like a racoon and some glasses plus lots of patience to tape off your fletching.

Have at it and post pics. What's the worst thing that could happen?

ok a little update on spray paint arrow cresting .
So I had 2 Easton XX75 2219 factory built Crossbow bolts with brown Aluminum shafts that I had for a x bow I no longer own .
I shoot Aluminum but never cared or the brown shaft after the shot it is hard to find.
I decided to try a spray paint dip or crest if you will to make it easier to recover after a shot.
I had a can of ACE hardware white spray paint at home and cleaned the shaft with acetone , taped off the nock and other end and painted 5 inches of the shaft white .
I let it sit 24 hours and tested the paint with my thumb nail and it scraped off easy so I figured it was a waist.
Well now about a week has gone buy and I tried the paint again and it is much better adhered so I went and fletched it up.
I did some shooting with it today and for the most part it went well .
The paint stayed on the shaft fine with normal bolt contact areas but my bow has been leaving a scratch on the rear of my bolts since I got it but it has always held a good group and I never dug into the issue .
well the paint reminded me and I found that I had a small rough point at the end of the rail ware it connects to the riser it was pretty miner but I think it was the culprit.
I could find nothing else that looked like it could cause a scratch so I took the riser off and gave a few strokes of a file to the rough point and I think it will fix the scratching of the shaft and nock but I need to shoot it again to see.
I like the look of the arrow as it turned out and plan on doing the second one to match.
I would most likely not do a crest on heavy used target shooting arrows but think that for a hunting arrow that gets shot a few times and then stays in a quiver for hunting it is a nice option and will make the arrow much easier to find.
The crested bolt shot very well no impact change at 30 yards.
