Need some info

Post by elkaholic »

Hello all, been awhile since I posted.

Ok, I drew a bull elk tag. I should be able to use my Exomax.. I've been using it for piggy. Setup to use 100gr.broadheads using ballistic 425 bolts. Very accurate out to 30 using pins.

My dilemma, I want to install my new Nikon P3 Prostatff crossbow with a BDC 60 reticle.

Now I'm pretty slow on all the finer details involved in using a reticle designed to be zerod at 20 yrds using a 400 bolt including 100 grain broadhead. With a velocity of 305 fps. My Exomax is known for 350 fps.

I'm limited to 20 yrd target and where to shoot without traveling

Any all info greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, I know I bought a rail scope mount with the anti fire But since moving , I got no idea where to look for it! Figures, LOL

I always used the Nikon Spot On Ballistic calculator on their website. Input your scope, bolt and speed and it should do the rest.

Congratulations on getting the tag! I can't wait to read the story of your hunt. This forum is in the summer doldrums now and some real life hunting reports would be welcome.

Good luck!

If we're you I would put in a session of shooting out to your maximum personal distance with your hunting arrows and the broadheadsl you will use. You will never really know for sure where your true point of impact will be until you actually put the time in.

Good luck with the hunt! :)

Two matters to keep in mind, assuming your shooting distance limit is 45 yards:

1. What is the approximate size of the kill zone of an elk?

2. What is the point of impact drop if you sight in for 20 yards but shoot at 45 yards?

, what broadhead.
I've had great luck with the Tooth of the Arrow XL. I put a vented one through a whitetail spine last year, then resharpened it and put it through a nice bear. You can't get much more durable than that, except maybe with the standard non-vented version. I'll be using some of the standard TOTA XL heads this season. They have heavier weights available, but I'm using the 100gr versions. Last season I had 110gr brass inserts up front. This year I'll have 160gr of brass up front. I wouldn't hesitate to use them on large game to include elk.

Good luck with the elk hunt.

Tooth of the Arrow makes a very good head. So does VPA. I like them both. The VPA can be had in some really heavy weights up to 300gr.
The TOTA biggest is 175gr.
TOTA can be had in vented or solid configurations. The VPA is a solid head only.

I did take a Barasingha, (Elk-sized Exotic), with a 150gr. TOTA last fall. Complete pass thru at about 33 yards. You could NOT tell the head had been shot simply by looking at it.
I like the solids, why? Vents whistle.

Good luck with the Elk!!!

I meant to ask you earlier, is this an Arizona Bull Elk tag?
If so, super congrats!! They are like "hen's teeth" to non-residents.

I wish you a ton of success!!
