New Arrow Shaft from Black Eagle

Post by Normous »

If any of you US members are looking for stiffer and heavier Black Eagle Zombie from Black Eagle contact George at Straight Shooter Custom Arrows in Florida.

The Woody is not listed on the Black Eagle site.

This arrow is a collaboration between George M. , Jerry R. and Black Eagle Arrows. The standard Zombie is 9.1 gpi and the Woody Zombie is 10.9 gpi offering increased stiffness and the same .001 straightness consistency BE is known for.

The WOODY is a standard Zombie is covered in a hard proprietary fiberglass finish featuring a wood grain finish. Kind of like a hybrid adding stiffness and durability.

In your hands its a great looking realistic arrow with no two shafts having the same grain finish.

*** For forum members located in Canada see the Trading Post for the built Woody.

I wondered when they'd get around to coating more arrows. While I was at the Virginia Sportsman's Show this past weekend I picked up a pack of Black Eagle vintage arrows for my stick bow. They have the same wood grain coating and they look awesome. The wood grain is nice, but I was even more impressed at the detail that Black Eagle puts into the cresting. They're almost too pretty to shoot.

It didn't hurt that I bought them from Byron Ferguson after getting to chat with him briefly about traditional archery.

I'm working on assembling 6 Woodys for Fall Ontario Bear.
I found they are better than .001 and spine deflection is consistent between shafts.

Up front, I'm using a 125 gr SS Ethics custom insert.
Should be around 535 gr with the 150 gr SWAT XMAG STEEL on the serious end.

Man, that arrow label reminded me of some of the best looking mx bikes, back when Universal Studios sponsored the factory Honda team and motocoss was my life then.

Norm, what do you know about the carbon weave of the new Switch Blade shaft? I asked George some questions but didn't really get straight-forward answers. Got a set to try anyway in my micro.

Tyler ^^

2 versions of the Switch Blade were made. The SB in the current configuration available weighs 8.5 gpi.
For reference, the Zombie is 9.1 gpi.

One can play around with the FOC somewhat easier with a shaft featuring less grains per inch. The Switchblade shaft stiffness is suitable for both heavy and lighter arrows.

Stiffness lies between the Zombie and Executioner shaft weights are all familiar with.

What's unique is the 3k twill pattern selected for this shaft.
It's the first twill pattern I've held in my hand. It has real nice visual appeal!

My wife has been using the SB shaft at 20" this season with an overall weight of 445 gr.

I double sleeved the front 6" portion for increased stiffness, I might add.

We have shot Zombies and Executioner shafts of different weights and configurations and report the SB printing the best accurate and consistency of any shaft we have tested out of her Custom Scorpyd.

I have no field durability reports yet because she has not arrowed a deer yet this season.

My thoughts....
It's a beautiful looking arrow that's very accurate from her bow. Reporting dime sized grouping at 30 y with a glued up SWAT XMAG.

Good luck in my arrow contest!

Good to know. Thanks for the reply and info. I'm hoping the carbon weave gives it some added durability and crack resistance. I've been fairly unimpressed over the last few years on the BEE and ZS shaft lack of resistance to cracking.

Tyler,
The Penetrator shaft is what I would choose first for added durability if I was choosing between the Heartbreaker, Penetrator and Switchblade.
Its my personal use xbow shaft out of my crossbow and the stiffest offered from SSCA.
