Elk hunt update

Post by elkaholic »

Warm weather 74-45. Elk just starting to bugle a little after dark.
Even though low number tags this unit. Lots of hunters cruisein looking for elk , which are nocturnal still.

Still hunting with exomax more of a challenge than expected. I won't caring thru woods cooked.

Sitting a tank ok.

9 days left. Hope rut starts soon.

Good Luck, crowds stink, but part of the game these days.

Good luck! I've hunted them and killed them with a rifle but I can't imagine using an arrow!

These days with public land, crowds are the reason most folks stay away.
I haven't hunted Elk in many years now, but if I did, I think I'd look for landowner tags and try that route.

No landowner tags in Az. You can someplace pay a trespass type fee.

Still no bulls. Sporadic bugles. Still mostly nocturnal.
Bulls bugling on the mtn. tops. Some action after dark and early am. But go quiet after sunrise.
Some tree rubs are starting.

This danged archery is too early. The muzzy hunts that follow are gonna get prime rutting.

Taking Sunday off, thankfully only 1hr. drive home, try avoid weekend traffic in the woods. Atv rental shop usually has busy weekends.

I tried! Elk just weren't in the rut! Weather was way to warm! Way to many atvs than in previous yrs!
I don't feel to bad as local guide only filled 2 or 5 for his clients, with guys running all over the unit trying to find hot buglin bulls.

This is why I quit hunting public lands out west years ago. I don't play well with idiots on ATV's.!! :eusa-naughty:

Sorry your hunt was a bust. :(

The few times we tried elk hunting in high temperature it was miserable and not many bulls were moving. My brother was probably 5 years old when he shot a spike that wandered in to some cow calls in Sept. We haven't been elk hunting in a while.
