Rarest Fish i have ever caught

Post by Species8472 »

Got my Abitibi northern pike mount back. Caught last April through the ice on a 28 inch St. Croix Mojo Ice ultralight rod, 6 lb test, no leader. 1/4 oz jig head tipped with a pinhead minnow. 38.5 inches and 16 lbs. Was hemming and hawing about getting a mount made but the unique lack of markings and the pale grey/pink/blue colour sealed the deal. Only pike i have ever seen like this. It is called a blue pike and is a genetic mutation found in about 1 in 500 northern pike. Of those they almost never exceed 10 lbs.

Only data i could find came from Minnesota where over 43 years they recorded about 1200 examples and out of those the largest recorded was 12 lbs. Also found some info indicating the world soft water record came out of NW Ontario and was 48 inches. Could not find any info for a hardwater record so i have unofficially claimed that record LOL.

The mount:

Hung up at the cottage. Lifting that into place solo was more work than landing that sucker. Place of honor right above the big screen

Beauty mount!
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

Nearly took all my line 6 times. I was using a Shimano ultralight 500 series Sedona spinning reel and only had 50 yards of line on it. I can hardly believe everything held together. The Mojo ultralight rod was bent well past 180 degrees a bunch of times. Three knots held together as well - the jig head and two sides of a micro swivel to tip the 6 lb braid with 6 lb fluorocarbon. Every time i tried to turn its head into the hole he took off running again. He did try to take his pound of flesh coming through the hole:
