Not clear how to use magnification without changing scope since final adjustments are made with fps ring which also moves magnification- not at al like normal rifle scope

That's the way it is supposed to work. You zero at 20, get your 40 right by using the speed/magnification correct and then you leave it. No magnification adjustments after that.
