Last minute doe

Post by Valleywalker »

Last night with less than 30 minutes left in legal light, on the very last day in our whitetail season I finally had a doe walk into range on my blind at the back of my property. I had been hoping for “the horse” as my wife and I call her - the local large bodied Matriarch doe that I’ve been seeing here on and off for the past 6 years that dwarfs the other does but alas, she didn’t show her head (again). I still ended up with meat in the freezer though, no complaints!

Got her with a 28 yard broadside shot with my new Bulldog 305 Mortzy shooting 100gr x-act Broadheads. I have always shot 150gr boltcutters in my other bows and this was the first time shooting mechanicals, albeit lighter. Took out the main arteries at the top of the heart, great blood trail, found her piled up around 75 yards away. Full pass through and my arrow was sitting a few yards behind where I shot her. I limit my shots to 30y as a maximum and the lighter arrows seem to work fine.

I spent a fair few days out and about on public land during rifle season, both hunting with rifle and with my crossbow - a few close calls but couldn’t quite seal the deal. I was out of free time to spend much more time hunting my spots on crown land during December but I kept thinking “there’s always my backyard blind” - well, December 1st rolled around (start of late season archery in my management unit) and wouldn’t you know it - the rental property beside me got new tenants at the start of the month with two large unruly dogs who spent the first couple days running loose all over my property until I had a few firm talks with their owners. Needless to say the local deer population vanished and I was about ready to give up, wasn’t looking good.

Good reminder for me to never give up! I was feeling pretty defeated after sitting every evening the past week with no sightings but it all came together at literally the last minute.

I can’t seem to post a picture, seems my photo is to large to attach.

Way to hang in there and come through at the last minute! I'll repeat: "every deer is a trophy". I too switched to Xacts from fixed blades a few years ago and I am pleased with them. I use the heavier than Firebolts Black Eagle Zombies and Executioners and have no trouble getting pass throughs.

Enjoy your well earned venison!

Way to stick with it!
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

Congratulations! It’s great to see the low poundage bows do damage!
