Wouldn't it be neat to see a vertical croosbow? Something you could cock, and then twist the handle somehow to make it shoot Vertically. Never need to watch out for those nasty tree branches in the stand again!
I am sure it could be done, because we are the top of the food chain!!!

These are all great ideas, but some state regulations specify that you cannot have any mechanical device hold the bow at full draw.
(e) It is the illegal to use any device secured to or supported by the bow for the purpose of maintaining the bow at full draw or in a firing position, except for hunters with disabilities... (Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife 2004 Hunting Regulations pg 11)
Personally, I think one of the "purist" arguments against crossbows being a form of archery is that the crossbow shooter does not have to hold the bow at full draw. I am probably going to open up the cannon worms with this next comment, but here goes. In regards to efficiency I feel that a crossbow is more efficient of a weapon than a vertical bow in terms of fatal recoverable game wound per shot ratio over time. After all the longer you hold a vertical bow at full draw the greater chance you have at making a poor shot. Granted, a pass-through gut shot may be fatal over time but that animal will be very difficult if not impossible to track due to lack of tractable blood loss. Whereas with a crossbow, obviously, we rely on mechanics over muscle to hold our weapons at full draw, whereby eliminating fatigue. However, the argument can be raised that the mere act of shouldering and holding the crossbow in a firing position for an extended period of time will induce muscle fatigue, yet it is my experience that it is much easier to shoulder a rifle (since I have never shouldered the crossbow prior to injury) freehand for 3+ minutes then hold a 70# compound at 24.5# (65% let off) for the same amount of time. Just my two cents worth...

Flying Ace- Just read your thing on the Washington Fish and Game rules. Open up a real can of worms: Remind them there are a awful lot of guys in their game fields using bows with little round things fastened on the end of the limbs. I think they might help MAINTAIN THE BOW AT FULL DRAW.Nail them with their own stupidity!
