Stripping veins

Post by FlyingAce »

What is the best way to strip veins from both carbon and aluminum shafts? Once they are stripped and there is some residual veins and glue what should I used to strip that as well? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

FlyingAce thats a good question....With Alum. shafts I use a some what dull knife and cut off any feathers or vanes still on. Then scrape in a back and forth motion untill the shaft is clean too the feel. I then clean it with acetone.

For carbon it is all most the same, the big difference is you MUST be more Carefull when cutting and scraping off the feathers or vanes as to not cut the shaft. Then clean with acetone.

bj might have so fine pointers on cleaning old shafts for reflecthing...or Jim C.

I use a utility knife. But like Gary says, I dont have a brand new blade in it because they seem to be to sharp. I have only done aluminum.

I believe bj does his arrows mostly the same way, except that he gives them a light rub with steel wool before he cleans them with alcohol! Then proceed with re-fletching!
I did mine much the same way except I gave them a really light rub with fine emery cloth to make sure they were clean and flat!
After the vanes are on we give them another rub with emery around the vanes to clean off any residual glue!
Enjoy the Harvest!

Just picked up a sauders Pro Stripper, and WOW! Sure does a clean and quick fletch removal. And it didn't damage any shafts, both alum and carbon. GREAT PRODUCT
