Correct me if I'm wrong, but this moose looks like he's in the rut. If my eyes serve me well, I believe I can see his ding dong hanging from underneath. Is it not moose that when there in the rut, they urinate in a mud hole or wallow, and then lay down in it so they get it all over themselves and smell pretty for the girls.

Come on all you moose hunters, what your assessment. Lonewolf, how right am I on this one ??

You got it GREYOWL.

The females will also lay down and roll themselves in these rut pits (wallows) as a way of letting the bull know that she is ready/willing to be serviced... And yep he looks ready, however he's still in velvet which tells me that this pic was more than likely taken in late August/early September... To tell you the truth it looks to me like he was just looking for a place to cool off before he gets that velvet rubbed off to be ready for the up coming rut... :)

Whether you're firearm or bow hunting if you can find one or two of these pits and the rut's on, a hunter should set himself up on a trail leading to/from and not far from these pits. Especially if there is fresh thrashing /breaks close by and a fresh bull track in the pit...
