Shoot or Pass??

Post by Woody Williams »

Archery hunting - Take a close look and decide, shoot or pass and wait for a better shot..

BTW - These are all legal deer that you would want to shoot..

I would shoot 7 and 8, based on the pictures. Even though they are pics of a 3D target. 9 and 3 if prior to their head being obscured by branches and leaves I had identified whether or not they doned a rack.
You can take the man out of the woods but you can't take the woods out of the man.

I would not shoot #4 or #6.......the others are dead deer walking!

I have killed deer straight under the tree, just align the vertical crosshair with the spine, put the horizontal crosshair slightly back from the shoulders and turn it loose! I have also shot through light brush right next to a target such as in #3 and #9.....no problems there either......

Here are my answers.. YMMV..

#1 – NO.

I may get a spine shot and drop him in his tracks. Then again I might be off to one side and only get one lung. One lung shot deer can go forever, even until next year. Hopefully that deer will walk out a ways and make a turn giving me a quartering away or broadside shot.

#2 – YES.

My bow shoots way flat enough to get under that tree limb

#3 – YES

#4 – NO

My bow doesn’t shoot THAT flat.

#5 – YES

3 yards is way closer than I like but I can get both lungs with a properly placed arrow.

#6 – NO

There is too much bone in front of the vitals. That deer has to turn one way or the other or walk past me.

#7 – YES

Love it!!

#8 – YES

Love it!!

#9 – NO.

There is a sapling right across the vitals. C’mon….take one little step….

Woody,

This was a really good exercise. I am new to bow hunting, and I had not thought about the flatness of the trajectory and obstacles. I will keep this in mind now.

Thanks,

Russ

6,7,8 are the only ones I'd shoot myself. I always prefer a lower double-lung shot.

I would take 2,3,5,8, and 9. I'm not sure about 1. Could an arrow penetrate the spine?
