New to everything!!

Post by grizzled47 »

Hi you guys & gals,
I came over to Canada a few months ago, and will soon be living in a new home with three acres or so of land...mostly wooded! I recently made inquiries about varmin conyrol on my own land, and was told that I wouldn't need a licence for that, and could deal with almost any "critters" except deer & moose. I was going to buy a crossbow, but I'm not sure how I stand with the law etc. The information I got regarding varmin control on my own land came from the proper source, and I have it in writing. But I want to know if I can buy a crossbow now, and use it on my own land without having to get any sort of licence? I know I would have to get licenced to "hunt" with the bow ( maybe sometime later) but for now I just want to target shoot, and control any problem critters. I should mention that I come from England, and have no experience of shooting, except with air rifles as a young man.
I intend to take the required courses for licencing firearms in the coming months but, for now, I just want to use a bow on my land. I like what I have seen written on this forum with regards to excalibur bows, and will probably go with the exorcet, if I am alowed to buy one. Could any of you guys advise me...I would welcome any help you can give.
I'm a new member (today) and don't know much about the subject, so please excuse my ignorance. I'm a responsible 58 year old retired guy, and want to make sure I'm on the right lines. Hope to hear from some of you soon,
Many thanks,
Grizzled!

Welcome!! You do not require a licence to purchase a crossbow You could use it on your own property for target practice although if you live in a town/city I would be very careful. Out in the country no probs.

In regards to varmint control I would think that if you off a rabbit/ racoon etc you would need a licence. (I reside in Ontario) If you have something in writing I would make sure it is extremely detailed.

Many thanks AW. I got the info from the government dept of public resources, and dept of government services in NB. It came right from the enforcement guys! The said " Any critters that bothered me, except deer and moose" So I can purchase a bow then? Where is the nearest dealer to me in Guelph? I don't intend shooting anything that doesn't bother me, and will be practising with the targets, to become profficient with the bow. My home is set in the country...very rural, and only two other dwellings within 3 or 4 miles.
Thanks again for the welcome & info.
Grizz.

Give bj an email. He is number 118 in the members list. Here's his email.
Maybe somebody send you his phone number

His prices are pretty good and is great to deal with.

Another helpful tip... practicing is good... just pull the bolt out from one shot before taking another or vary your shots...

Excalibur put Robin Hood outta business for splitting arrows, they are that accurate!!

You won't need a licence to shoot targets any where on your property or at a club for archery, but if your going to shoot rabbits, squirrels, other ground pests on others property, I would think you will have to possess an Outdoors Card if you do wish to hunt or fish in Ontario

Thanks for the info and advice digger. I only intend to shoot on my own land for now, so would I be ok in baging a rabbit etc if the chance arose?
How do I get the outdoor card if I want one...and can I just buy one like a fishing licence ( which I have)?
Thanks for the welcome everyone...I need your guidance for now, so thanks in advance.

Hi Grizzled, and welcome to this site, and this side of the big pond. Just be real careful you got your licenses covered, and have a LOT of fun with the new bow.
