MAth guys .53 oz equal how many grains?

Post by tcct2003 »

Shot my Phoenix today through a chrono.. 296 ft/sec with a Gold Tip laser II with 100 grain field tip...

I weighed my arrow and it weighed 0.53 ounces... How many grains would this equate to?

What kind of kenetic energy would this be?

Can I get more speed safely out of my phoenix?

As always thanks guys, this is so much fun...

Is that not to light for a bolt 230 gr.?
Is this right?
Phoenix - 375 gr. BEE's (babyneilsons)
Micro 315 - 410 gr. Zombies/Lumenoks

Not sure what you are asking but the link below is helpful
http://www.excaliburcrossbow.com/arrowselect.html
The exocet is close enough for your calculation.
It states that a LaserII is 360gr. Did you weigh it with the point on?
FYI there is 7000 grains in a lb.(7000/16=437.5gr per oz)

1 oz (advp) = 437.5 grains

1 oz = 28.34952 grams..

Which do they want thats what my conversion chart says

(28.34952 X .53) X 15.41 = 231..539 grains...

- that arrow shoud really smoke out of that exocet  - for a couple of shots anyway  ...

Check your weights again, are you sure it wasn't .83 oz that would give you about 363 grains with 100 gr field point, and you won't shatter your limbs. you shoud get around 306 fps with those #s.

Digger's right on the math and bj's right on the comment:

I shot one out of my Exocet that had no point screwed in  and it did get to the target quickly! No damage, but I sure changed the way I sort my arrows so I won't do it again

I measure the weight on two different scales. The first scale only went to .0 one digist and the second mail scale went to .00 two digits. The first one was .5 and the second was .53. I have shot this arrow now 5 times and no exploding.

I just wanted to point out that the Goldtip laser II is 8.6 gr/in X 20" = 172
add the 100 gr field tip and now you are at a minimum 272. Add front insert + rear insert + glue+ fletches it has to be closer to 350 grains.

Now why did it measure .5 and .53? These scales are used to measure packages for fedex and ups and are calibrated monthly.

What is the maximum weight that the scales measure to? To measure something that light, the scale probably should have a max capacity of only 5 or 6 ozs. If it is something like a 2 or 5 lb. scale, then even though it measures to 2 decimal places, it won't be accurate because it will be measuring at the very bottom of its range.

Checked one of my arrows today.
361 grains / .82 ounces / 15.0 pennyweight / 23.3 gram on one scale
and .8 ounces on my postage scale
all weights matched perfectly when converted
I'd say either the scales you used are in need of calibration, or you've got a dangerously underweight arrow! I don't see how it would be that light, though, the basic components should add up to close to the weight you got with the point!
