what weight

Post by Big John »

Garyl:

As I've stated before in my posts, I use 400 gr. total weight, this with a Wasp Boss 100 gr. head. Exomag 200 lb. The Bear will die at 25 yds.
There will be a big 1 in. hole and lots of blood. However I would not use anything smaller in weight of bolt or draw. Some of the other people I know use 425 gr., even 450 gr. bolts for Bear, however for me my set up is fast and clean and meat comes home.

I voted other, Exocet 175# wasn't on the list. 2117 aluminums, with 130gr Camlocks up front.

I'd use the one I already own, an Exocet (175#). I've never hunted bear, but I've been told with a properly placed arrow they are not hard to kill. I'd probably use me deer hunting setup, a GoldTip arrow weighted to give me 375 grains with the point, and my Montec broadheads.

bear bolt set up

Have you ever tested what speed you get from a 450 gr.?
There sure is a lot of K.E. at a good speed.
I have never gone that high in weight yet. But I would for Moose.

Bear is the main reason I purchased an Excal. My buddy and I are working ourselves up for it hopefully next spring. We have locations already scouted out. Most guys who go on a spring hunt here end up succesfull. So I will be using my Phoenix with 100gr slick tricks (with Mr. .870 as backup  )

With a 450 grain bolt at 310 fps you could add another 16+ lbs of K.E to that 80...

With that bolt set-up being shot out of the Paradox you are getting 96.05 ft lbs of K.E...

Although I have never hunted bear (and probably never will), I think I would go with the 200lb Exocet, I would want something I could reload in a hurry without having to use a cocking device. You never know what a bear is going to do.
