Can Jewish people eat venison?

Post by maple »

I was considering giving my Jewish neighbour some venison for Hanukkah, since it pretty much coincides with Christmas this year, however, is venison one of the prohibited animals, like pigs?

They don't seem to keep strictly Kosher, (which would mean the animal would have to be quickly killed under the supervision of a rabbi), and they don't seem to go to synagog. They belong to one of the more liberated sects I guess, but I don't want to do something completely insensitive.

Does anybody know?

Maybe I should just give them a jar of wildgrape jelly.

My hunting partner of nearly 30 years is of the Jewish faith, and he is married to a Catholic.
They celebrate both holidays.
The fact that he hunts deer should be a clue!
In my opinion,it depends on how closely they follow their religion.
If you know him well enough, ask him!
I doubt that he will be offended.

Maple,

Venison should be fine to eat for Jews.
Anything with a split hoof is OK.
You can always offer the meat, explain what it is and if they
think it's improper for them to eat they will decline.
As long as you're not giving them pork and tell it's chicken - you're OK.

You're right that in order for meat to be considered kosher
the animal must be slaughtered by a "shohet" in a certain way
and as much blood as possible should be drained.
Rabbi doesn't have to be present :-)
Muslims do it practically the same way and they call it "halal" meat instead
of kosher. Many Muslims would eat kosher meat in absence of halal.

That's it for today trivia ;-)

The old testament law of moses states clearly that any hooved animal that ruminates(spelling) is fit for consumption. It also states Deer as appropriate meat to eat.

A pig is also hooved but does not ruminate. Thats the difference.

I am sure he would enjoy your venison.

Brampton Mike are all truck drivers this rude or just you. Maple is asking ahonest a legitimate question that he needs some knowledge on and you always come out with your rude remarks.

Why don't you just stay on the other boards where they think you are extremely wanted and welcome.(little do you really know how everyone really feel about you)

Your question, "Can Jewish people eat venison?". The answer is "of course", anybody can eat venison. All you have to do it cook it, cut it into small pieces, put it in your mouth, chew and swallow!

The proper question should have been: "Do people of the Jewish faith eat venison?"

Maple,

I'd just ask the fellow. If he declines, the wife and I are heading to N.S. this week, and my dear old dad got skunked again this year, so I'd be glad to take it to him  .

Ecoaster,
Your father did not take a Rabbi hunting with him did he? That would explain his lack of success, do you know how hard it would be hunting having a Rabbi telling you how to kill your deer?
