String serving repairs

The serving flew to bits on my phoenix a wile back, I used some picture framing string as a string serving, works ok but is a tad fatter ie hooks from cocking aid dont just flick off as easily and it seems to be wearing faster than the original serving. Would dacron from my fishing reel do the job with a double layer? Im a sort of fixit myself man as there are no archery shops around my area.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Not sure what you have available to you there, I use Brownell's DIAMONDBACK .026 braided serving:

I would guess that it may be too expensive for you to order from over there, not sure what you could use to subsitute, don't know if your Dacron fishing line would work, but it may be worth a try if you have nothing else. Sorry.

Thanks huntin1, I guess I could only give it a try. It does get expensive to order from overseas so I will wait untill I need a few more GTs and slick tricks, I do have a spare string but I will only use that when I really do need to.

How often or does the protactant covering at the limb tips need to be repaired.

What do u guys use for winding the serving on tightly?

Is there a tool to use for string serving that wont cost the earth as I fixed the last serving while it was stretced out tight while on my xbow using a cotton holder I use for rod repairs & pulled the tag end back under with a loop of string I placed under the binding several raps from the end.

Untill you get a serving tool and serving material you might want to try to use some of the new fishing lines like spiderwire or whatever. Looking at my serving tools make me think you can probably make your own serving tool pretty easily.

I shoot an Excal Phoenix using 355 gr. 2018 16.5" bolts @303 fps with FFF string. Original serving didn't last long. I used 45# "Musky Master Braided Micron Line" black fishing line to re-serve. I treated the secured ends of the serving with super glue and also soaked the entire re-served area with carpenters glue. After drying, I waxed the string and served areas heavily with beeswax, thoroughly rubbed into the string with hand friction heat. I rewax the entire string after about each 20 shots. This serving has lasted for many shots and is still strong.

they would ship pretty cheap I rekon, i havent seen what they have in the way of strings but from the list on the side and what i have looked at it looks like they have everything.

I used Elmers Carpenters Glue. It's a yellow color. It seems to set the new serving in place. After drying, I rub the beeswax in with hand friction to heat it.

By the way, I first finish the ends of the reserving by feeding the ends through a few loops and then pulling tight, kinda like the old method of whipping the ends of braided rope that the Boy Scouts used. Then I put Super Glue on the ends of the re-served area to set them. Then I trim the excess. They stay put.

THEN, I do the Elmers glue on ALL of the re-served area .....

have had some of the same problems with servings. good braided fishing line works as good or better than " archery serving " deepending on your choice .

Your Kevlar braided line idea sounds good. I shoot a Phoenix right now, but if my ship comes in and I'm healthy enough, I'll be getting a Max where the serving REALLY gets a workout! So I'll be trying the Kevlar sometime.....

Hey guys thanks for all your help, I really mean it as I dont know anyone here in NZ with a xbow so its hard and my town is a long way from any archery shop. I tryed some 80lb spectra but didnt tie it off tight enough as it slips a little on the string. Ill try again tighter at the finish end with some glue.
