tuning bolts and slick trick broadheads?

Post by fitpays »

hey guys. much like many hunters, i have been plagued with the woes of not being able to find broadheads that fly like fieldtips. i have bought all sorts of different brands that claim to fly like fieldtips to no avail. i absolutely hate mechanicals and have found that they dont fly any better than fixed blades. my most recent purchase was slick tricks. the guy that makes them is a great guy and i got great service with them. last year i went two for two with the slick tricks, killing an 8 pt buck and a doe. these things make holes like a slug-gun! anyway, i have been searching around on the internet as to how to tune my bolts and broadheads to no avail. the amount of information is overwhelming! i am wondering how you guys do it and with what level of success? call me crazy, but i dont think you should have to change your bow/crossbow to make broadheads hit the same spot as your field points.

thanks for any suggestions.

It's simple for me, all my inserts are epoxied, I just screw a slick on and take a shot at 30 yds. If it hits my 2.5" target it goes into my hunting quiver, if it doesn't, target pile. Rarely do I have one not pass my test. one shot into foam doesn't seem to dull them any at all.

I tune by trial & error
I couldn't get SlickTricks to group with field points when I first tried them. Good groups, but low-left from field points! I changes fletching from 4º right offset to an 8º right helical and they then grouped right with the field points.
