More Bad Press
jh45gun I guess it is in how the artical told the story. Should the story be told, yes it should. Should it be linked to hunters, no it should not. These articals should make sure the public sees it as it is. That it is criminals poaching, not hunters. That anyone that poaches an animal is nothing more than a criminal and should be jailed. Also hunters are against that kind of behavour. If the artical shows that, then I a all for it.

Personally, this smells like a crock to me. First, why is the deer near a salt block? They usually run a bit before they die. Second, why is the arrow still in it? Why was the head missing? Bucks are not out of velvet when they are attracted to salt in my experience. Next, why take the head and not have time to take the arrow? The whole thing stinks and if I owned a magazine which was stupid enough to print a cock-and-bull story like this I'd be ashamed of myself! Either the writer was duped by the lady, or else he's as guilty as her.

Most poachers use a 22, at least the ones out for more than one Joy Kill. If its real it may be safely ignored. Sounds more like the North American Bowhunters Col. trying their new stuff they learned from their allies..PETA.
Only an Idiot would poach a deer, and even more of an idiot would use a crossbow.

Now that I have read the ariticle, Ms Paula is not so bad, she just doesn't like poachers. As far as the crossbow bolt, it is insigificant as it could have been an arrow or a bullet.
In my 20 years in the Army as a Military Policeman, being the outdoor guy with some stripes meant I was in charge of the Game warden office. This included Ft Richardson Alaska, Ft Sill Ok, Ft Chaffee Ar, and Ft Ord Ca. Of couse I investigated a lot of poaching. I once dug a normal arrow out of a bull moose found dead at the side of the road...Another I found a pistol bullet inside...then we found the idiot's Army ID card on the ground by the carcus. Low and behold it was my own Company Commander was found to be in consert with the First Sergent of my MP Company...out joy killing a bull moose....I outranked both of them the next day.
It's not about bolts, arrows or bullets..when it comes to poaching its about IDIOTS.

Since gun hunters kill far more deer in a shorter period of time why would a poacher select a crossbow when a 22 is nearly as quiet and with a far greater range. I agree with bstout. Sounds like more PETA BS. It is just not logical to have to go to all the trouble to set up a salt block, wit for them to show up, shoot them, gut them, lug the meat out of the woods when deer can be shot with a 22 at night in a field close to the road.
Another thing that makes no sense. A salt block is only hit from early spring through part of August. In August they lay off the salt . Somebody hunting horns, (cutting off the head and leaving the rest of the deer) would want the buck to develop every 1/4 inch of horn because it is cash in the pocket. So the buck would not be frequenting a salt block much once August approaches. If they want velvet maybe; but not for hard horn.
