Rye grass fall plot?

Post by Tigerpaw »

Just wondering if any of you all plant rye as a fall food plot and how it has worked for you?

Got a couple plots out with a combination of beans (soy & regular garden variety beans), turnips, clover, and rye grass. The beans are being "topped" every day, the deer haven't started on the turnips yet, and the rye grass & clover is just starting to grow good. I'll watch to see how it does.

I planted a large trac of it for fall grazing for my beef cattle but am considering keeping them off it until after Oct. bow season.

i have been using rye planted in the fall for food plots for over 20 years, i have 3 small food plots bordering each other, one has clover another has a wildlife mix that the department of natural resources plants and then i have the rye. the deer walk thru the other two and dont stop to feed until they reach the ryeand its very easy to grow.,the only downside of it is you have to replant every year.

tigerpaw,
i only know it as field rye, i go to the local feed and grain store and i just ask for rye seed for the deer. i plant it pretty thick cuz the deer keep it mowed down pretty good, i use 16-16-16 fertilizer i just broadcast both seed and fwertilizer then drag it with a heavy chain link fence drag and my 4 wheeler and mine is usually comming up in 5 days or so even in dry years it comes up pretty well. i plant mine here in northern michigan by september 1st if time allows, this year i will be planting on sunday
august 27 and ill gaurantee the deer will be using it within a week after it sprouts......goodluck :!: :!:
