I had a pair of Sorel rubber boots that lasted 8 years or so before I put a hole in them. I replaced them with a pair of Redhead rubbers with 1200-1600gram thinsulate. They are warm, dry, scentfree and only $130. cdn.

They are not as light as non-rubber boots but I think the ability to stalk through standing water 12" or deeper without worry is a big plus.

Made in china or made in canada? Does it matter? Have you seen some of the people that work in the Canadian factories or the quality of some of the products that come from Canada? In my line of work, ornamental iron, we see some real crap made right here. Guys bring their work to the powder-coaters in hopes that the powder-coating will help hold it together. Seriously!

You have the right to be angry about what you have experienced with Rocky.
I own a pair thats several years old and they are rubber and have been fine.

However the best hunting boots I've ever owned are my Danners. They have gone through more abuse yet have been lightweight (Antelope skin), warm, comfortable, waterproof and I wouldn't take double what I paid for them new.

There are some items that you should never skimp on and good boots in my opinion are one of them. Rocky used to have that kind of reputation but not anymore.

Bought a pair of the Irish Setters last fall. Love them! I don't cheap out on hunting or work boots because it just isn't worth it. What is the Archer's Nook's return policy? I would fight to get your money back if the boots are stated to be "100%" water proof. Two pairs and the same problem isn't coincidence. Don't waste your time getting a third pair. Maybe you can get, at the least a store credit, and sell it to someone for 20-30 bucks less than it's worth. Then you'll only be out the 20-30 bucks and not have to spend your money there anymore.

Sounds like the customer service toilet bowl again. Too many companies around this area are in the mind set that "If you don't buy it, there are 4 million other people around the GTA that will". Once they have your money, the smiles and "helpful" service are wiped clean!

trky chsr wrote:For you guys with the Irish Setters I may have to check out their "great customer service". I bought mine in February and while scouting in the rain last week sure enough they leaked. I'm not very happy as I had bought another brand of cheaper boots and took them in (in the spring) because they leaked and traded up to these and now they leak. It's too bad because they are very warm and comfortable. They are the 800gram ones (not sure of the name). TC
TC, I have a 800 gram pair, I believe they are the Buck Trackers. I bought them 2 years ago. 100 % waterproof my butt. After about a month, and through a few creeks, they leaked at the neoprene/leather seam on the top of the foot. I took them back where I got them (Flaherty's in T.O.) and they sent them back to Irish Setter for me. When I got my new pair the same thing happened in the same spot. Man was I P.O.'d. They wouldn't do anything the second time so I was screwed. I have since treated them with a water guard at this seam and haven't had any problems. However, I'm not going through the amount of water I used to.

Other than the water problems, I love the boot, they are warm and comfortable.

Hey John,
My 7yr old Columbias were starting to come apart on me, so I stopped at the outfitter's in downtown North Bay. He happened to have the Irish Setters on sale $128 :D WOW I got "snow trackers" 1000 grams. I wore them moose hunting all last week and I really like them. My only little problem was that they are a high cut and breaking them in was a bit tough on the calves.
p.s. crossbows are EXTREMELY awkward in canoes!!

Good luck with the boots!

you cant go wrong buying a pair of danner boots. my dad bought a pair of danner canadians a while back and he loves them. i just hunt in rubber boots especially during the bow season. i just upgraded to a pair of redhead 600 gram thinsulate from a pair of kamiks that i bought at TSC. my feet always end up a little cold by the end of the day during a winter hunt but other than that the rubber boots arent to bad.

pphoenix, same boots that I got 2 seasons ago. They're great for $119.00 you can't go wrong. Exellent traction, support and warmth (1000gr. thinsulate). Never had any problems with moisture either. 9" model is excellent for support/protection... Hope you'll like them.

Try these boots in water before you go hunting!I bought the same boots last year and they leaked. They seemed to leak were the tonge is atached to the boot.On the bright side Canadian Tire refunded my money no questions asked.I am not going to buy any boot this year that doesn't have the Gore-tex tag on them!

I've had a pair of Irish Setters for 3 years with 1000 gr. of Thinsulate per boot. Never had cold or wet feet.. The only problem is that with 1000 grams of Thinsulate it has to be a really cold day before I wear them.

Here's a little tip I learned many years ago. I posted this back in 2003.

When I buy new leather boots I wear them for a couple of days to break them in and open the pores in the leather/seams.

Then I get some "Mink Oil" and smear it onto the boots. The next thing is to "Blow Dry" them. The mink oil will soak right into the leather and seams. Repeat until it no longer soaks in. Make sure you do this over some newspaper. Repeat this every year.

I had a pair of Browning boots for 24 years doing this every year.

Earlier this year I bought these boots (with 400grams Thinsolate) at BassPro in Vaughn. (Top right corner.

Just curious. Has anybody tried my little tip since I posted it in 2003?

If you are looking for Rocky warranty service try Oleyland (previously known as Underwoods) in Ingersoll. I know a guy that had problems with Rocky boots that didn't even buy them there and they were quick to replace them for him. They are a large retailer of boots and work wear, so they may get quicker action from Rocky. Make sure you have your bill of sale. I bought some Irish Setter Buck Trackers from them and they said just bring them back if there is a problem.

I don`t see the boot you are refering to? I would like to see them :D As for the Mink Oil, yes I do that with leather boots With Goretex, but if they don`t have Goretex I use Snow Seal. If you use Snow Seal on boots with Goretex your boots won`t breath, Snow Seal locks everything and out, Mink Oil let`s boot breath. Snow Seal is a little better water protector, but won`t let the boot breath, with Goretex you want it to breath, so you use Mink Oil and you are good to go. The Mink Oil is there to protect the leather. Jack.
