Need advice on Black Bear.

Post by LV2HNT »

I have never wanted to shoot a bear because I always heard they were no good to eat. I have met some people over the years though that realy seem to enjoy it. Plus the bears around my fathers cabin are becoming a real nusance. They don't seem to have any fear of humans and they eat or tear up everything left outside. They have even tried to get into both my dad's truck and cabin before leaving a lot of scratches and teeth marks behind. For the reasons above and because my dad wants a nice rug or a full body mount, I have been starting to rethink my position on bear hunting. I have some questions though before I make up my mind.

1. Will my exocet with stock GT-2's and 100gr. wasps do the trick or should I get heavier bolts and bigger broadheads?

2. If I do shoot one, can I gut it like I would a deer before getting it out of the woods?

3. Do any of you know how to butcher a bear? Is it the same as a dear more or less? If I shoot one I will be eating it and I have never heard of a bear butcher.

4. How do they taste to you?

Thanks in advance and good luck.
A bad day in the woods is better than a good day anywhere else.

I think I would have a back-up rifle just in case. Mind you a bear wouldn't get any traction with what I'd leave behind me.

My situation is much the same as the one you describe. Your set-up will work fine w/ a good shot. For eating, a 250 lb or so female is alot better than a boar. An easy way to tell the difference is a female's head is smaller than a boars, imagine a dog collar around their neck. A female looks like it would be hard to keep one on her, the male is the opposite. If you get one and are not fond of the meat, you can make sausage or jerky out of it. Good luck!!

Your setup will do just fine but always have a backup when hunting bear. I shot a bear in July and used a .308 and we also had a 12 gauge as backup. Make sure to take the backup when/if you have to track him. They are not real friendly when wounded! I wanted to use my Excalibur but regulations where I hunted would not allow it. You will love the taste. I prefer it over moose and deer anytime. Any butcher that does a deer will also do a bear. My brother is a butcher and did mine for me. You can gut it the same as you would a deer. If I were closer I would have no trouble getting rid of the meat for you.... :)
