Great idea but I can't figure out how the range finder attaches to the mounting unit?

Anybody know?

It uses the all mighty velcro Al! It holds on there really well and I had no trouble when playing with it. I will have full details and more images of this cool range finder mount when I get a second...which this month seems to be scarce!

How does something like this come into play for a cross bow (rangefinder not the cameras). I thought that the general rule of thumb is 20 -25 yards as the maximum safe shot? However I do understand that once you get past that point the bolt starts to drop more significantly. Is that how this is used to make sure the shot isn't past the safe kill zone or is it to make longer shots?

One more question as I really want to take up wildlife photography this year and the camera mount sounds very cool. How do you take the picture while you're shooting? Aren't you going to be a tad busy getting the bow up and lined up and then down to track direction, arrow exit etc.

John, first of all one must ascertain the one can use a video cam without it being damage from the recoil. If so, all that you'd have to do is cock and lock your crossbow. When a shot presents itself, start the cam with the push of a button, remove the safety on the crossbow and you're away to the races. If you're talking "still pics", it be a bit harder, but not impossible. I suppose you could use the automatic shutter release, like when take self portraits.

I don't have a dog, I guess I'll have to get one so that I can learn how to judge distances.

Navaman, I'm just being factitious, actually you're pretty wise, by multi-tasking, you're "killing two birds with one stone.

Gentlemen,

Yes Bill Troubridge did write something like that. I read it last night. You can find more at the Horizontal Bowhunter website
(see link below).

Under the heading and link Regular Columns, you will find the section and link CROSSBOW HUNTING TIPS - Bill Troubridge

In the part of the article called SUMMER 2005-TUNE UPS you will find the following text.
Bill Troubridge wrote:The best way to get in the groove is to walk along and looking for an object to range. Once you decide on a tree, fence, sign or whatever, stop and make your best estimate on how far it is. Next, get out your rangefinder and see what the range really is.

You’ll either be pleased or surprised when you see the actual distance, but you will learn! With enough repetition, you’ll find that you are more and more likely to be very close in your estimate. If you take your rangefinder out a few nights a week for the month before season, those split second range estimates will pay off in filled freezer space this year.
Link to the article.
