I use to never let a Jack Rabbit opportuity pass ! ... they are excellent " slow cooker " fare ...

For years the Jack Rabbit population was in decline in our area .... so I found myself taking pictures of them instead ...

The numbers seem to be on the rise now ....

Joe said to me after the encounter " I was wondering why you didn't shoot when it was so close to you ? "

I said " I can shoot a Jack Rabbit anytime .... but who knows when I might get an opportunity to frame hunter and rabbit in the same picture again " " those are trophy moments in my eyes ... got to take advantage of them when you can "

We will head out again next week for some " meat and potato shots "

Great pics as always Rick :)

I hear you on the lovely weather conditions, I moved the mother-in-law up to Hanover in that & it was a long drive, especially when I had a white rental van in the white out conditions

Great to see your pics as always & some excellent action shots of that jack standing up.

Nice pictures again R.J. Was that in the Cambridge area you were hunting? Haven't seen any around in my area where I hunt.

Hey R.J............... what with a brown rabbit in snow? Haven't they changed color yet? Ours are all white here, blending in the snow.

Are you sure you guys didn't release a tame rabbit, or on a hunt farm?

P.S. Remember if charged by a rogue rabbit, fire a warning shot over its head.

Great pics RJ, keep them coming PLEASE

Saxman, is it common down south for the same game to have parasites making them unworthy as table fare?

Grey Owl, out my way we have mostly snowshoe hares too, but we have a few European hares that don't change colour. They aren't as big as these Jacks.

  GreyOwl .... nope ... our snowshoe rabbits look like this ...

Image

Our Jack rabbits are much bigger than a snowshoe rabbit ... and they stay brown all the time ...

But not as big as these ones from Texas ! ... I guess everything is bigger in Texas !

Image

Here is an old blurry picture I got off the net. Must be from Texas ... Something fishy going on here !

Learn something new every day. I didn't know that your Jack Rabbits don't change colors. Man them suckers don't stand a chance in the snow, eh!

Those Texas rabbits are big, good thing their not mean.

Where to go for Jacks? The only place I've seen them is on a friends farm in Hastings, 2 or more hours drive.

WOW, Great photo's
I don't know what I like hunting more. Jacks, Fox and Coyotes in the winter or deer in the fall.
I hunt them solo with a rifle. or sometimes with another guy.
I can almost feel the cold snow when looking at your photo's
They are great.
