Excal Stringer Advice

Post by joeyd50 »

Hi guys I posted this question on HuntingNet and thought I'd give a try here also, Has anybody ever made a bow stringer, like the Excalibur stringer? I just took the new one out of the box that came with my bow, I used it to take the string off, went to put the string back on and the blue thing on the end broke, it scared the $hit out of me, I thought I broke my little finger, after I got the bleeding to stop I could see my finger was OK. I don't think I'll ever trust one these again.

try a search on here.. quite a few make their own but I'm not sure how they do it. If your's broke, email excal and they will send you a new one.

That's weird! I just had my stringer shatter as well. Fortunately my fingers were pretty much out of the way. The fine folks at Excalibur were nice enough to replace the stringer which isn't that cheap despite it's inexpensive look. You might want to give them a call they were great with me.

I'm glad I'm able to span my Excaliburs without the use of a stringer. It makes the process faster, easier, and it's one less thing to carry or worry about forgetting or losing.

I didn't even think of doing it manually but it would be handy in a pinch. Any hints on how other than being a big brute of a guy??? Is it a two person job? any chance of damaging the bow.

I'm only 5'6", and 160lbs., but have no trouble at all. It's all technique, not brute strength. I use my right foot and right arm to bend the bow while holding the string in my left hand. If you check your user's manual/DVD you'll see how it's done.

We have had a few break, but for the life of us we can't understand what is happening. They consistantly test at about ten times required load before failure at a local lab, and we are pulling our hair out trying to sort it out. We are now changing injection molders as the only answer we can come up with is poor injection practices, and going to an even stronger material, and we fervently hope that this is never again an issue.

Years ago, before I'd ever seen the stringer, someone told me about them and I made my own out of 3/4" plywood.

Worked fine and I still use it.

Wayne.........
Wayne: I have one of the older ones I think. It has a white end and a leather piece on the other end. I love it to pieces. I don't see any reason to have plastic at both ends. As long as a person is deliberate with the leather end it works great!
Bob, i think what you have is one of the older stringers which actually is what i call a cordura boot that is on one end of the rope...it's folded over to form an envelope for the limb tip - basically the same style as some of the recurve traditional stringers (Selway ?)...it is an excal. product and works great on a vixen or possibly a phoenix...it may even have a piece of surgical type tubing on the rope that was meant to latch in the trigger mechansism, the same as the bow string would...if it's the one i'm thinking of, it works great on the smaller poundage bows and i still use one on a couple of carved tip bows i have...for anyone that has one of these though, i would keep an eye on the cordura boot if i was using it on one of the bigbore bows...
- just me opinion of course...

p.s - the stringer i use, is white and white thick heavy duty, thicker rope, adjusts easily without untying any knots, and will pull my dodge hemi around the yard...
