But which way do they run (away from or toward you)?????DJH wrote:When I say "bolt" I am talking about what women usually do when they see me walk into the room...
Now think about this:
When a beautiful woman wears a sexy leather dress
A man's heart beats quicker
His throat gets dry
He goes weak in the knees
And he begins to think irrationally.
Ever wonder why?

Wes . . .that's funny. I had a hard time calling them bolts . . .I was calling them arrows and the guys I was shooting my crossbow with kept correcting me. I finally got into the habit of calling them bolts when this thread hit. Oh what a relief . . .I didn't have to force myself to call them bolts anymore. They look like arrows, fly like arrrows or darts . . .they don't look or fly like a bolt.Limbs and Bolts wrote:Got to make another change, my avatar bothered people, now get rid of my bolts, this place is starting to get to many guru's and fashion police
We would all be better served to call them what they are, arrows.
By the way . . .stop wearing those short skirts while visiting the forum.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

"bolts" were used in crossbows medevil times, and were a short iron spike designed to defeat armour, definitely not what we use today, and definitely not the same purpose.
On that note, I have my own beef: People that refer to their X-Bow as their "weapon"
A weapon is an implement designed to wound or kill another human in combat.....a howitzer is a "weapon", a 50 BMG is a "weapon", and M4 is a "weapon", a bayonet is a "weapon"....please stop referring to anything that shoots as a "weapon"....it's a little creepy.

If you can't set a good example, at least serve as a horrible warning.

Ha! Wouldja get a load of this this dodo!ninepointer wrote:The perfectionist in me wants to continue to refer to crossbow bolts as "bolts", but I've found that in common usage, the word "arrows" is more convenient. It's kind of like using the term rifle "clip", when technically its a magazine. Now I've noticed that the Excal website calls them "arrows". If the word "arrows' is good enough for Excalibur, its good enough for me

Ummm....wiki is HARDLY a credible source. Definitions by user....no thanks. Let's try Websters, or Mirriams, or one of the other actual dictionaries.
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language,:
weap·on (wpn)
n.
1. An instrument of attack or defense in combat, as a gun, missile, or sword.
2. Zoology A part or organ, such as a claw or stinger, used by an animal in attack or defense.
3. A means used to defend against or defeat another: Logic was her weapon.
Collins English Dictionary
weapon [ˈwɛpən]
n
1. (Military / Arms & Armour (excluding Firearms)) (Military / Firearms, Gunnery, Ordnance & Artillery) an object or instrument used in fighting
Kernerman English Learner’s Dictionary
n weapon [ˈwepən]
any instrument or means which is used for one's own defence or for attacking others Rifles, arrows, atom bombs and tanks are all weapons; The police are looking for the murder weapon; Surprise is our best weapon.
Websters
Main Entry: 1weap·on
Pronunciation: \ˈwe-pən\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English wepen, from Old English wǣpen; akin to Old High German wāffan weapon, Old Norse vāpn
Date: before 12th century
1 : something (as a club, knife, or gun) used to injure, defeat, or destroy
2 : a means of contending against another
Random House Dictionary
–noun 1. any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon.
Etc, etc, etc.
When a tool is being used by a human against another human, it then becomes a weapon. Cars, pillows, hammers, baseball bats, gold clubs...all can and have become weapons, but we certainly don't refer to them as such.
Honey, have you seen the keys for the weapon? I gotta go to work
Where the heck did I put my weapon? The baseball game is about to start!
So I was driving a nail and smacked my thumb with my weapon
Damn! I overshot the green, should'a picked a different weapon
Gotta hit the tree stand, need to tune up the weapon
The soldier grabbed his weapon and engaged the insurgents
Which one of these fits?

It's funny to see how these threads end up sometimes. I'm going to refer to my crossbow as my "tool" from now on.

I kind of like "implement” or perhaps "apparatus", but my favorite has to be "instrument"!
As I head into the forest with my "instrument" to pluck out that mournful, woeful tune of death to the unsuspecting whitetail deer that reside there in apparent peace.
But if I ever get attacked by a bear, an overly horney whitetail buck or a rabid opossum, I will take great comfort in the fact that my implement, tool or instrument will quickly and easily convert into a "weapon" that will help fend off the attack and help save my aging and wasting-away butt!
It is hard to believe the crossbow can be so many things to so many people. It is even more awesome than I first thought, especially since it shoots arrows. Makes me want to bolt right out and buy a new one.

I agree Robert! It is a very large part of why I fell in love with writing. The possibilities, patterns and creative opportunities are endless. Only the limitations of imagination restrict the playing field.
