Species - new value (old value): trumpeter swan - $2,500 ($1,000); Eastern massasauga rattlesnake - $2,500 ($1,000); wild turkey - $500 ($300); white-tailed deer/antlerless - $250 ($400); white-tailed deer/antlered - $500 ($400); walleye - $50 ($10); largemouth bass - $50 ($10); and steelhead - $50 ($10).
The legislation also addressed increased values for "trophy" white-tailed deer.
An additional progressive formula will be applied to bucks with a gross score more than 125 inches on the Boone and Crocket (B&C) scale. Antlered deer scoring under 125 B&C would be valued at $500. Poached deer scoring 125 B&C would have a restitution value of $1,531.25; 150 B&C would result in $4,625 restitution value; and a 170 B&C would call for a $8,585 restitution value.

Poaching is getting expensive in Ohio
New legislation was enacted raising the restitution value of game taken illegally in Ohio. Looks like a trophy buck could really hit poachers in the pocketbook!

Those are not fines, they are the value of the animal killed. It's that price + a fine + forfeiture of guns, equipment, and vehicles used in the crime + loss of hunting privileges.dick195252 wrote:No EXCUSE for Poaching Those fines still are not High enough Triple them
A big problem here is the poachers shooting bucks with big racks to sell the head & rack. They locate them and then slip in at night with a rifle and kill them. A few are even dumb enough to try to tag them as archery kills. I've seen the area conservation officer bring bucks in to my buddy's processing place to have them skinned and examined for the method of killing them. In several cases he left with plenty of pics, perhaps a bullet, and the head with antlers attached. The meat is left to donate to needy families, so they aren't wasted in that sense. Matter of fact, some of those tenderloins my family has been eating may have come from some of those deer.Partlike wrote:I'm no fan of poaching and I agree with fines but how can they have a sliding scale for the antler size? Why don't they just make all whitetail deer that are poached $8500 and not just the big ones?
Unfortunately, these days people pay big bucks for big bucks! (pun intended)
Those trophy mounts (or caped heads) can be sold for a lot of $$$$
The killing is illegal, the sale is illegal, the possession of the mount is illegal, but it's still a big business in our impoverished area. There have been a few "poacher rings" busted in Ohio in recent years and the increase in the cost of shooting those bucks might help slow it down.

A big poaching ring was busted up in Coshocton County. Good story about it in the last issue of Ohio Outdoor News http://www.ohiooutdoornews.com/.

I believe in Conservation Law Enforcement. If it weren't for the efforts of national, provincial and state agencies to protect natural resources, we wouldn't have any wild places to enjoy, or anything to hunt.
I believe in clear rules, efficient education, strict enforcement and tough penalties. That being said, I always hope that officers will be representatives of everything that's good about sportsmen, and that they will conduct themselves with courtesy, dignity and decorum as they seek our common good.
I think it's a shame when officers make clear cases only to have them thrown out or downplayed by wrist-slapping judges who probably do a little poaching themselves.
Seems like that happens a lot here in Carolina.
