Ray I boarded a plane for the first time last year. I've watched enough movies and seen the occasional headline, so yeah there was some hesitation. Mostly it was the unknown.

Some people hate the take off. Some dislike the landing. Turbulance, I've heard, can be rough at times. Then again so can some of the roads around here after winter(potholes).

The take off is somehat like being in the seat of an acclerating sports car then you feel yourself being pushed up. Not much different than an amusement ride. Once the climb is done you can't even tell you are moving.

I enjoyed the take off and the landing. I also like amusment rides.

I also enjoyed looking down at the world, trying to identify bodies of water, cities. Flying up through the clouds as the sun rose. Beautiful!!!

You only live once. Now is the time to experience it.

I don't think Tyler will be scared unless he sees that you are scared. Try and make it like a fun neat thing and I bet he will love it. It's a neat thing to look out the window and go up. Even if you are afraid of heights it does not seem to bother you in a plane. My kids were on a place a couple of years ago and loved it. For them it was as fun as the rides we took when we arrived at Disney.

At 13 i hopped a plane to New Brunswick with 2 days notice to go visit my cousins for a week, then hopped a flight home. It wasnt that bad, and the airlines do treat you well.

As far as school goes id say talk to the teachers and they will have no problem, especially with tyler being younger. I know friends of mine taking weeks off Highschool and University just as long as you give your teachers some notice, they will send you the work ahead of time.

In grade 11 i took two weeks off to go moose hunting, did some work while i was gone and some when i got back didnt hurt me at all.

Ray, I suffer from motion sickness. You name it..I've thrown up on it. I can't sit in a backseat, I can't look down and dig through my tackle box even in reasonably calm water. Two years ago our son and his fiancee deciced to get married in Cuba. Immediately, 30 friends and relatives signed on to go. I figured I was pretty much screwed. However, my wife went to see our family doctor and explained the problem. He gave me a mild sedative of which I take 1 pill and then a couple of Gravol. This year I cut it back to 1/2 a tablet plus the Gravol. Can't wait for next year!

Tyler has flown before and he loved it. I guess I'll just have to "man up" and catch up with the rest of the world. Tyler definitely won't miss out on this opportunity because of my fear of flying. Thanks for the support guys.

missing school

Post by jc2white »

Regarding your son missing school, being a teacher, I would think that there is alot more educational value in a trip to Maine, than a week in school. I am happy when my students are able miss class to go on a trip. I do expect them to get caught up though.

hunt of a lifetime

Post by hunter 740 »

Ray I had the same feelings before my first flight too.I hunt out of a tree stand at twenty feet all year but still get dizzy when I first stand up,buy the I ca'nt stand a lock on because of my fear of heights. But once I was on the plane and in the the air I could'nt tell we were moving. We hit a little turbulance or I would not have been able to tell at all.The turbulance felt like hitting little wind driven breaks in an aluminum john boat, not a big deal at all.Plus in less than two hours I flew from Ohio to Jacksonville Florida. When I drove it it took fourteen and onehalf hours.Fly and enjoy the horizon its great.

Ray,
Flying is not bad. Once you get airborne you will relax and enjoy it. The first takeoff and landing can create some tense thoughts, but it is actually a safe way to travel.
That being said, let me confess I'd rather drive on a trip like you're taking.
I just hate the waits and restrictions on commercial air travel. Haven't flown since 9/11, and probably won't unless I have a need to go cross country or overseas.
A few things to think about:
How will you transport guns or bows?
From what I've read it is easiest to mail them to your destination before you leave. (and from what I've read, guns can be mailed from YOU to YOU - in care of the outfitter)
How about heavy/bulky equipment?
Again - it might be easier to ship it ahead.

Ray - be sure and read this thread!

Ray,
The first time flying is by far more scary than any other form of transportation... That's bacisally because until we do a few trips we really don't know what to expect. We don't know the whole pre-flight process, the ticketing, baggage check, the security checks and all. And then once we're onboard, we don't know the actual "feeling" of flying, we don't know what the different "sounds" mean or how we're going to react to the experience. That's because we are out of our element and in it's basic form it is an unnatural experience for earth bound creatures. But that's simply because we don't know what to expect... That's probably why you're freaking out... The "WHAT IF's" have you worried..... However, flying on a modern commercial airliner is like being on a hugh bus.... that just happens to be in the air... Once you're on board and you sit back and relax and just let the pilot and flight crew take control of things, everything and I mean everything from there on is a piece of cake... You're worked up over the unknown...and the best way to quelch your concerns is to talk to the airlines people about any questions you may have... They really go out of their way to take care of special needs folks and they really want you to have a pleasant flight.. If I were you, I'd call the airlines and explain your concerns and then call them back again with any other questions that you may have, and if necessary call them again to make sure you heard correctly.... Then you will see that there's NOTHING that they won't do to make your flight enjoyable.....
If you're not convinced give a call to another disabled hunter that may have experiecne flying and see what they have to say.... That's the first steps to easing your mind.....and if that you're still uneasy...take a small trip somewhere.. Perhaps a little 3 day, long weekend vacation by plane to see what it's all about... Then you'll be better prepared for the hunting trip to Maine.....

You are going to love it Ray!!! The flight may not be your cup of tea, but it is more than worth it. Not only will you be going on a great hunt in a beautifull land. You will also be teaching or reinforcing some very valuable lessons for Tyler and yourself about responsibility, (getting his school work done) courage, (facing your fears head on) sacrifice, (doing what you don't want for the sake of your loved ones and to enjoy your sport) and faith (trusting in god to keep you safe).

I believe you guys are being rewarded for your good deeds but most of the time, nothing is free. You will have to face your fears to get those rewards. By doing that, you and Tyler will both become better people after this and that is the way god wants it.

I think you will be fine but it may be a good idea to get some medication incase you take off and start to feel bad. I realy don't think you will need it though. Also make sure you talk to the outfitter and make a plan to get your meat and maybe capes back home when it's over. Have a blast, and do ma a favor too. Reward yourselves with a couple lobsters if you get the chance.
A bad day in the woods is better than a good day anywhere else.
