When do you change your string?

Post by ninepointer »

I busted a string yesterday, it snapped at the eye-loop. That got me wondering how often I should change my string. There's got to be a better way than shooting them until they snap.

How ofter do you guys change your strings?

My strings have always snapped at the eye-loop. I shoot carved-tip limbs; are these harder on strings?

ninepointer . . .how many shots do you get before they snap? How many have snapped? Has it always snapped at the same loop? Is there any sign of wear before snapping?

I put a lot of shots on a string and I haven't had one snap yet.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

I'll bet on two things. First 9pointer did not wax his strings with any regularity and two, the string grooves need to be polished to remove sharp corners. My first Exocet went through the same scenario.

To answer your question, I change mine (permanently) after 2 and not more than 3 re-servings depending on pull of bow.

Boo . . .I was thinking towards the polishing. I'll bet very few of us wax the entire string regularly. How often should the entire string be waxed?

Just as often as you can. I don't have a solid answer but I think that any time you have a loop off it's a good idea. Many string loops never get any wax!

Thanks for the feedback :) . In my case, waxing (the ENTIRE string) isn't the problem, I've been anal about that since the first time that I broke a string. I can't remember if the breakages have occured in the same loop. Any suggested methods for polishing the grooves?

Few of questions for you:
*Are all the snapped strings the same type?
(FFF - Endless Loop Dacron - Endless loop FF - etc.)
*Do you check the loop area of the string for (flattening or fraying) wear occasionally?
*Were these strings ever dry fired?

Ask Peter. I sent mine in to be polished and it hasn't been a problem since. It looks like they took a buffing wheel to the grooves but it took the paint off the ends. You could try a polishing point and rouge on a dremel. I am guessing but I think it is possible to over heat the resin in the limbs.

Boo, I was gonna say the same.. I doubt anyone put wax on the loops.. I started waxing mine about every 40-50 shots(loops that is). It only takes a minute so why not;)

I change the strings on my hunting xbows every year a couple weeks before deer season starts and keep them as backup if they're still in good shape. :) :)

First I would check the limb tips to see if I could locate a rough spot. It doesn't have to be much to cause a big problem. Mine are perfectly smooth . . .nothing rough about them.

I don't wax the entire string very often. When I do wax them, they seem to still have plenty of wax on them. I store my spare strings in a plastic baggie and keep in a dry dark spot at room temp. I just hadn't had an issue yet with the string . . .of course, I've been shooting a different string every week. :)

Boo,

Sounds like a good idea, but who's Peter, somebody at Excal?

P.S. The strings I'm using are the regular (not FFF) Excal brand strings.

The endless loop string has only 1/2 the total strands in the loop when compared to a flemish twist. In other words - if it's a 30 strand string the loop has only 15 strands. I have read that an endless loop is actually stronger than a flemish in the force it takes to break it, but if there is a problem of roughness causing wear in the string groove and the serving is wearing and/or seperating and not protecting the actual string material - then you have only half the strands taking all the force.
