what else can go wrong???????

Post by wabi »

Been an interesting year for sure so far.
Day 1 - Opening morning and any deer is fair game for some fresh meat. In the stand for 1/2 hour and here comes a nice big doe. She is walking and turns to give me a perfect broadside shot well within range, so I "baaaaaa" her to a stop and pull the trigger. Thud, the arrow hits the ground after passing under her! ????? A quick trip to the range confirms that the scope that had me smacking the bullseye yesterday evening has suddenly shifted to throw the arrow way low left!

Last week - stuck an air rifle scope on temporarily and ordered a vari-zone, but confirmed the air rifle scope was sighted in and holding zero. Cold front moving in, so I decided to hunt. At the food plot/feeder site and a nice 8 point is coming in toward the blind when the &#%*$ feeder goes off and spooks him!

Tonight - Got the new vari-zone mounted and sighted in, so I decide to try the ladder stand on the property line next to the bean field (I have permission for both farms). Set a doe decoy next to the fencerow (soybean field side), climb up and get ready. 2 Does come out at about 100 yards from the west. A nice 8 point at 150 yards from the east, and 3 does to the north at about 200 yards (I'm on the south edge). I tickle the rattling antlers together and one of the 3 does jerks her head up and slowly starts my way, while the buck just looks. I wait, then the group of 3 does look to the west and bolt from the field???? Then the other deer take off! Then my ears pick up the sound. Here comes the &#%*$ combine!

Oh well, tomorrow's another day, and the freshly combined field just may attract a few deer back! :D

And one of my favorite lines I like to use:
And thats why they call it "hunting" and not "getting"

While playing golf one day a guy told me a joke that i will never forget... i have changed the joke to apply to hunting rather then golfing but it goes like this!

Why was hunting given the name "hunting"?

....

Because F*^K was taken!!

That pretty much sums up wabi's week!

LOL That's a good one huntsman

Sorry about your misfortune Wabi... Hell we got months to hunt yet in Ohio. I haven't even got serious about it yet. Too dang hot, but it is starting to cool off now.

How's the flashlights?

I hope it works out for you Mike! I wouldn't be too concerned about the machinery though, as long as it doesn't stop moving then the deer usually resume right away. I sometimes use the extra noise to reposition myself if needed, the deers attention is usually on the implement, for the most part.
Last year I bailed from my position because the combine did a fly by, I got home all frustrated and emailed a friend, he told me not to worry about it, to just keep hunting, he was right, the deer were only dis positioned for a brief moment. If it stops in the field then that is a whole different story though.
The deer here pay so little attention to farm machinery I considered using a tractor to scout from. :D

Wabi,

It'll all work out. You're doing all the right things so it's just a matter of time....

Wabi,

At least you are seeing deer. I've been six times this year and the only deer I've seen went across my front yard last night while I was sitting at the table eating dinner. However, my wife considers those the neighborhood pets and they are off limits.

Wabi, I would hunt the freshly cut bean field for certain. It has been my experience that those fields get a lot of activity in the first few days after they have been harvested.

Ive actaully killed a good buck walking the inside edge of a bean field while my dad was on the combine...

The perfect hunt is if the farmer is finished at say 4pm... every deer in that area will hit that field to see what was going on after the farmer leaves..

Unfortunately they started combining very late yesterday evening, but they finished last night. I plan to leave soon to be in the stand a bit earlier than usual this evening. The deer usually start coming out about 5:30 - 6:00PM, so I want to be in the stand by 5:00 at the latest. One good thing about that location is that I can park my truck within 100 yards of the stand, and it's out of sight of the field and the trails the deer use.
Even if I don't get a shot this evening, I'll bet I will see deer!
