What do you do in the stand to pass time
As the subject says what do you do in the stand to pass time ? I like to play the alphabet game ie. Come up with a automobile that starts with each letter of the alphabet or different countries .
Many things. Pretend my xbow is a guitar, running my fingers along the forestock playing noiseless notes.
Think about when the deer are going to show up. Why they show up sometimes but not others.
Sometimes I nod off for a second or two.
Take pictures.
Complain to myself about the waterproof gloves that I am wearing in the rain, my hands soaking wet.
Wondering if there are deer under my other stands. Chewing their cud.
I try to send messages to the thousand crows that are caw, caw, cawwing "Shut up" or "You're lucky I don't have my shotgun with me!". It's impossible to hear anything when there are that many.
I think about ways to make a treestand that can pivot or roll from one side of the tree to the other. A 360 degree treestand.

You can take the man out of the woods but you can't take the woods out of the man.

Sweating
Looking
Listening
Nodding off
Day dreaming
Sleeping
Shivering
Wondering if it will affect my hunt that I have dropped something that I didnt intend to....i.e. bolt, hat, glove~!
That about sums up my evening tonight~!
Seriously, I try to stay focussed with the task at hand but often find my mind wondering~!
Cheers,
Robin

Don't forget the hard plastic buttons or snaps that sound wonderful when your crossbow bangs into them.planter wrote:I also wonder why they put Velcro on hunting gear. It's the loudest tearing sound I can imagine.
Another thing that I don't understand is why are almost all deer calls/grunt tubes made of hard plastic/wood.
I like quiet.

Try to stay awake.
I read if I can. I am reading a book about a Algonquin Indian guide who take a English man on a canoe trip in 1945 in the park. True story, has some interesting things in it. The story is written by the English man, the Indian doesn't know it's being written, so he doesn't hid his true self.
Most of the time I day dream or admire my x bow.
Try to concentrate on noise, like twigs snapping.

I try to stay totally alert and aware of my suroundings. constantly pivoting my head slowly from left to right, right to left, watching for any movement that might be a deer. Even maintaining this I have had deer apear within 15-20yrds before I see them. Most of the time I detect them ou to as much as 50 yrds in the bush.

i sit there still visualizing how i hope my night goes where the deer will come from where he will stop just perfect where i place my arrow and how far the recovery is. so far its been nothing but day dreaming this year but it works to keep my mind occupied i guess its true what they say small things amuse small minds
Daydream about how the deer is going to appear in front of my and finally getting to use my xbow in a hunting situation.
Watch the chipmunks, woodpeckers, bluejays, grouse, and now rabbits. And think geeze I should have picked up some of those grabber attachments for using on small game with a field point.
Wonder if the deer at just laughing at me for spraying all that buck bomb around.
Look forward to hunting on my families land in SK when we move back home.
Dream about the future hunts.
Stare off into the trees and just think of nothing. I do this a lot when it is raining, sometimes 2 hours will seem just like 2 minutes.
Go through my mental checklist of what to do when the deer does present.
I have read a book a few times, but I find it too distracting.
I prefer to just think, because all the while I slowly scan the bush for deer.

Take it easy.
