Deer yards

Post by maple »

Although I've heard of them, I've never actually seen one. It sounds like a really interesting thing to experience at least once.

Does anyone know if there's a deer yard around Ottawa that I'd be able to visit?

Hi Maple;

I know of some deer yards around Black Donald Lake. That's my prime hunting area and where I have my camp. I was actually thinking of heading up there this weekend and was thinking of checking out one of the yards. It'll be a really good hike unless I can get most of the way in there with the truck or the ATV. I've got to stop in Dunrobin to drop off some venison and a genie along the way. PM me if you're interested.

The only large deer yards that I know of are on the east side of Lake Huron,stretching from around Kincardine,up to Owen Sound.
My son worked for the MNR when he first graduated,and they would do the yard surveys in that area in the wintertime.
It is a strip of bush,set back from the lake,where they get protection from the winds and heavy snows.
They break trails that go between their feeding and bedding areas.

Ok guys, here's the run down on a deer yard.... Usually a thick cedar area where the cedars act as a thermal blanket preventing deep snow. The thick cedar area also acts as a wind break and a source of food. The deer herd up and keep a packed trail area. I was at Millbridge Ontario last Saturday in the afternoon where there our hunt camps in the area help contribute financially to the locals in the community to supplement the herds feed with a mixture of hay / oats etc..
Take a drive any sunny afternoon now around 15:00hrs and watch for deer right in the backyards / driveways and you'll see deer up close and really not bothered by you taking photos etc.. I saw close to 200 with a few big boys still wearing their antlers. Sat in my truck about 30' from well over 100 watching them interact.

Our group of moose hunters have come accross the odd yard set up to feed deer and all wildlife in the winter ;when the snow makes it hard for them to forage for thier food.

We are thankfull that alot of thought was put into providing this for them and we will not divuldge the location nor will we hunt them anywhere near these locations!

Fair chase is fair hunting!

I know they yard up on the bottom part of Algonquin near Harcourt and they use the snowmobile trail to get around because it is hard packed I think the ministry feeds them there becuse I have seen the deer feeding on bales of hay just off the trail and the local club has signs posted of deer danger on the trail!!

Anyone know the SWO Deer Yards?

Post by watamach »

I hunt on properties in Plattsville/Bright and I know the deer yard up by RJ's place in Innerkip for that area. I hunt Kitchener/Roseville and I know the deer yard up in a few places either in the Roseville swamps or the 87WMU side in Kitchener. I have a couple of spots in Maryhill but dont know where they yard up there. Does anyone know that area? In our area the Haysville Deer Sanctuary (a righteous HUGE anti hunter) has established a gold mine on his property. I have seen 30-40 deer there all year round at different times and there are probably more. I like knowing where the deer yard so I can drive by at anytime and see them.
