Anyone Going Bear Hunting this Spring?
Anyone Going Bear Hunting this Spring?
Just wanted to see how many of you guys are going bear hunting this year? I'll be going back up to Taggart Bay Lodge in June. I'll Take my Exocet again , Maybe I'll hold out for a Big one this time. I shot a decent Bear up there 2 years ago. Maybe 180 lbs or so . I take quite the ribbing from my buddy Dave as he shoots a compound and calls my excalibur the cheater stick. Down here in PA they are voting on allowing crossbows in 2009 archery season. I hope it passes. Iv'e been a bowhunter for years with a compound and have shot quite a few deer and a couple turkeys and a bear with my bow. But given the Choice I'll take the X-bow over the compound. Anybody up there in Canada do their own baited bear hunts?

here in B.C. you are not allowed to bait. so everything is spot and stalk. going for a ride after work you can still see 6-12 bears a night if you know where to look. not all shooters but plenty to look at. will probably try the crossbow this year. bear hunting is a good excuse to look over new deer hunting areas I never find time for in the fall.
Bear Hunting over bait.
I hear critsism all the time for my opinion to legalize a full inclusion in PA's archery season most people of which have never shot a crossbow or seen it's effectiveness on game. My arguement for crossbows being allowed is I would much rather see a hunter go out with a crossbow and kill a deer and put his tag on it than go out with a bow that he can't shoot that well and cripple and lose deer year after year. Wounding happens with all weapons in hunting. But it has been my experience that it is easier to make a CONTROLLED ACCURATE SHOT on game when you don't have to hold back the string until the perfect shot presents itself. Buck Fever or Target Panic is much easier to overcome when you take the holding back the weight of the string out of the mental equation. A couple guys at work who dissapprove allowing crossbows in PA archery went out this year and either completely missed several deer or wounded several . Mind you, they shot their compounds all summer and could hit a snuff can at 40yds. I spoke my mind on the PA conference section of the Bowsite and got responses like "there will never be a crossbow in this house" Good luck with your bear hunts this year. Sorry I kind of got off the subject there. Yves at Taggart Bay works his butt off every year to keep the baits active and many nice bears are taken there every year. My buddy took one over 400 lbs. the first year we went up there. Anyone interested in going can shoot me a PM.

I won't be hunting bare this spring, either. Too many 'skeeters and redbugs.

I went the past three years so I cant go this year I have to many other things to spend money on this year. I did get one last spring with the bow. It wasnt a real big bear but it was very pretty. I am getting a full mount. I went to Otter Lake Qubec, it was a very nice hunt they feed you well and have alot of active baits. Very Beautiful Country. I love it up there and the people are soooooo nice.

Old Indian saying, if a leaf falls from a tree in the woods the turkey will see it, the deer will hear it, the bear will smell it, the moose will not eat it, but be on the look-out for LeGrand.
Here is a good link for Quebec Outfitters offering a spring bear hunt.
